*This course is scheduled to be a live-stream webinar, which means that it counts towards 10 of the Administrator's live training hour requirements.This 10-hour LIVE-STREAM WEBINAR course is designed to provide up-to-date information on how to define and conceptualize the term “dementia”, and to match needs with related supports. This engaging course will bridge the gap between “nice to know” information and must-have skills to meet the person-centered needs of individuals with or at risk for neurocognitive impairment.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

- Understand the definitions of dementia and neurocognitive impairment

- Gain knowledge of how the brain functions and what happens in the brain that creates a neurocognitive impairment (AKA “dementia”)

- Understand the history of the types of dementia and how they are identified and diagnosed

- Identify the differences between the most common types of dementia

- Identify Alzheimer’s and dementia in people with intellectual disabilities

- Understand the importance of creating a baseline for those in support settings

- Recognize what overshadowing is when supporting individuals with dementia and/or intellectual disabilities

- Have knowledge of new medical advancements in the treatment and diagnosis of dementia

- Identify the dangers of antipsychotic medication in the elderly with dementia

- Identify ways to reduce the use of antipsychotics for persons with dementia

- Understand incontinence and peri care protocols, best practices, and communication needs surrounding personal care

- Identify Sundowner Syndrome and learned best practices for those who have Sundowning tendencies

- Define the meaning of skin hunger and how to help reduce it

- Identify the three layers of skin and process to keep healthy skin

- Understand the relationship between skin integrity and dementia

- Recognize the dangers that can damage skin in assisted care

- Identify the Eight A’s of dementia

Participants must attend the entirety of this live-stream webinar in order to obtain certificates of attendance, and remain actively engaged throughout.
