About this event

  • Event lasts 2 hours

Celebrate Migratory Bird Day 2025 with a guided bird walk at Shenks Ferry Wildflower Preserve! During the spring season, millions of birds travel from their winter homes in Central and South America, bringing spectacular splashes of color and intense song to the Susquehanna River Valley. Some of these visitors will be seasonal residents while many continue onward to their summer breeding grounds to the north. During this intermediate walk, we will explore a variety of songbirds that may be seen or heard, including some of the more rare and vibrant birds.

What to Expect: This event will be fully outdoors. Walks may be taken on grass or trail areas that may contain uneven surfaces and some elevation changes. This event is recommended for ages 10 and up (participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult). There is a port-a-john available on site.

What to Bring: Bring binoculars if you have them; a small notebook, pen/pencil, and a smartphone for app instruction are recommended. If you have a field guide that you prefer to use, feel free to bring it along. Dress appropriately for the weather, including rain layers and waterproof boots. Bring water and a snack.

Event Leader: Sarah Gotwols is the Volunteer Coordinator and resident bird nerd at Lancaster Conservancy. Sarah is a Lancaster County native who has spent countless hours observing birds in their natural habitat along the Susquehanna River.

Refund Policy: If you are unable to attend this event after purchasing a ticket, refund requests must be made at least 48 hours before the event.

Animal Policy: Service animals active or in training are welcome. Please leave all pets at home.

Cancellation Policy: This event will be held rain or shine, with cancellation at the time of the event for severe weather. If the Conservancy reschedules the event, attendees will be emailed and tickets will be automatically moved to the new date. If the Conservancy cancels the event, attendees will be notified via email and refunded.
