On March 20, Joanna Reese is stepping into the hot seat as Alchemy Comedy’s “Local Legend.”

Here’s how it works: I tell true stories from my life — the kind that shaped me, challenged me, made me rethink everything, or made me laugh in hindsight. The improv cast listens carefully… and then builds an entirely unscripted comedy show inspired by those stories.

No script.
No rehearsal.
No idea what’s coming next.

If you’ve never been to Alchemy Comedy Theater, it’s one of Greenville’s most creative hidden gems. They’re open multiple nights a week, and their Local Legends series features people of note from our community sharing real stories to spark a fully improvised performance.

This night feels especially meaningful to me. So much of my work — in housing, advocacy, and community building — is about serious issues. But joy matters. Laughter matters. Gathering in a room together and experiencing something live, unfiltered, and human… that matters too.

We’ll gather beforehand at Coffee Underground for drinks and snacks — a relaxed chance to connect before the show. Then we’ll walk over together to Alchemy for the show.
