Hands-on Workshop of Home Runs & Hallucinations: What AI Gets Right (& Wrong)

Jeff Williams, Grand Valley State University, Kallie Bauer, Grand Valley State University

In this hands-on workshop, researchers from the Dorothy A. Johnson Center for Philanthropy at Grand Valley State University will share real case studies of how AI has performed in its applied research, highlighting both strong and scary results. Then, working in small groups, MERA members will analyze two raw qualitative datasets using one of five well-known AI tools to compare output quality, believability, and consistency across the tools. Then we’ll talk about how variations in both the prompt and the AI tool contribute to the variation in final results. Bring a laptop and an open mind, and you’ll leave the session with a new appreciation for progress and pitfalls using AI to analyze and summarize text.
