About this event

  • 1 hour

Let’s discover the poem in the painting. Attendees will create poetry based on the visual art in the exhibit. Participants will be guided through the writing process and share their work in a gallery performance giving voice to visual art and revealing their own personal “views from within”. The workshop is facilitated by author Casey Curry, and presented in conjunction with the Arts Committee of the Tampa (FL) Chapter of the Links, Incorporated and the Tampa Bay Chapter of the Pierians, Inc.

As a freelance writer she has contributed to many magazines and anthologies. Her poetry and fiction have won local, state, and national awards. They include writing workshops on poetry, fiction and memoir, book discussions, vision boards and a variety of unique visual and literary arts experiences. As the President of the Tampa Bay Chapter of the Pierians, Inc. and Arts Committee Chair of the Tampa (FL) Links, Incorporated, Ms. Curry engages in the promotion of arts expansion in the Tampa Bay community and beyond. Curry currently serves on several museum boards throughout the country and is a frequent speaker on the following topics: Female Liberation Theology, Bibliotherapy, Poetry and Poets STEAM, Educational Disparities in the Arts and Educating Gifted Girls.

"This event will be an exploration of the "Poem in the Picture" as an interdisciplinary exercise fusing visual and literary arts. The participants will need only a clipboard, paper and pen/pencil. I have a handout that I will bring that explains the structure and history of the form as well as two examples. We will go over the basics, write for about 45 minutes and have a brief (30 minutes) voluntary open mic session. In the session, the writers will share their work in the presence of their muse or inspiration." - Casey Curry
