Workshop details
Understanding the ever-changing landscape of aging is essential in helping us to successfully navigate this complex and expensive system. This 12 hour training series (in 4 individually accessible modules) will map the health care ecosystem of aging, give you the knowledge and practical tools you need to guide, finance and innovate for older adults into their later stages of life. The sessions will explore the fundamental aspects of aging, explain the financial mechanisms supporting older adults, identify the diverse resources beyond traditional insurance, and unpack the evolving complexities shaping the future of aging.

May 1 - The Big Picture: Aging 101
This workshop provides a foundational understanding of the complex intersection between healthcare, aging, and policy. Where we are going begins with undertanding where we have been and you surely need a map. This interactive session will lay the ground work for "how the money flows" and "how care is given" by mapping the health care ecosystem of aging. Beginning with an historical perspective on how aging and healthcare systems have evolved, including the impact of Medicare, we will examine the population dynamics shaping the future of aging (with focus on the DMV), including trends in aging in place, new care delivery models, and emerging technologies that are redefining care delivery. This session serves as a "must-have baseline" for anyone looking to serve seniors and drive innovation in the aging space.
May 8 - Deep Dive: Who Finances Aging
This workshop will break down the complex web of aging-related costs, helping you understand how expenses are covered and how money flows through the healthcare and non-healthcare systems. We’ll explore the role of personal funds, Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance, long-term care insurance, and specialized programs in financing aging. Additionally, we’ll dive into how innovation in the aging space is funded, the financial models driving change, and how forward-thinking solutions are reshaping care delivery for the future. We will detail the breakdown of aging in order to fully explore the "post-post retirement" period which is the heaviest driver of costs for individuals and for society.
May 15 - Beyond Insurance: What's on the Menu
From senior living and private duty care to home modifications and emerging technologies, many essential services that support aging in place fall outside traditional healthcare coverage. Those with financial resources can take advantage of innovations that enhance independence, safety, and well-being—such as smart home systems, concierge care, transportation solutions, and personalized wellness programs—while others may struggle to afford or even be aware of these options. The private-pay market is driving a wave of creativity and responsiveness in how care is delivered, but it also risks deepening inequities for older adults with limited income or social support. As private-pay services continue to shape how healthcare and aging-in-place solutions evolve, disparities in access, digital literacy, and service navigation become more pronounced. Understanding these gaps—and designing strategies to bridge them—is critical to ensuring that all older adults, regardless of means, can benefit from the rapidly growing ecosystem of aging-related resources and innovations.
May 22 - The Road Ahead: Decoding the Complexities of Aging
This session will bring together key insights from the first three workshops, connecting the dots between healthcare, aging, social determinants, and the evolving landscape of resources and innovation. We will synthesize the discussions on care delivery models, financing, and the role of emerging technologies in shaping the future of aging. Looking ahead, we’ll explore the policy decisions currently in motion that have the potential to transform healthcare and aging services in the coming years. By understanding these shifts, participants will be better equipped to navigate and influence the future of aging and care. This final session serves as both a recap and a forward-looking discussion on the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.
**Co-partnered happy hour with IntermezzoHealth and Coordology begins at 6pm.
