The Centerpiece is a contemporary art gallery in the N Person St neighborhood of downtown Raleigh, NC. We offer exceptional fine art, high-quailty custom framing and host fine art workshops.

Afterglow is a celebration of diverse mediums and methods of creation. The show features five artists with brand new pieces.

Afterglow is a celebration of diverse mediums and methods of creation. The show introduces four new artists to the gallery including Patrick Lee, who captures ethereal scenes of light and emotion; Laura Hughes, an equine enthusiast who combines rich colors and patterns; Ian Herdell, a craftsman of organic wall sculptures in wood, and Jenny Wu, a contemporary artist who repurposes house paint into geometric forms. We also welcome back Joshua Smith and his brand new dreamlike oil paintings. Join us for light refreshments and a chance to meet some of the artists in person.
&lt;b&gt;PATRICK LEE&lt;/b&gt;
Patrick Lee takes a unique creative approach to making paintings in the studio and en plein air. He draws heavily on intuition and imagination to develop an image, often altering the drawing, color, and spatial relationships to create a mood and express a feeling about the subject. This often leads to strong elements of abstraction and suggestion in his work, rather than explicit detail. This gives the viewer an opportunity to connect with each piece in their own way, inviting them to let their own imaginations make personal associations and connections.
&lt;b&gt;LAURA BERENDSEN HUGHES&lt;/b&gt;
Laura Berendsen Hughes is an acrylic painter working in Durham, North Carolina, USA. She paints dramatic, monumental silhouettes that balance initial spontaneity with the maturity of many layers of washes, impastos and line work. She has a BFA in sculpture from UNC - Chapel Hill and has worked as a professional graphic designer for many years. She uses her graphic design skills as an integral part of the process of creating initial compositions as well as adding final twists and turns.
&lt;b&gt;IAN HERDELL&lt;/b&gt;
Because my studio is small, I am able to give each piece the care and attention to detail that heirloom quality woodwork deserves. Most of my work is made from solid North American hardwoods, although I also use shop cut veneers on some projects. I love to create furniture and art with tangible functionality and down to earth beauty. I am inspired by the beauty and structure of forms found in nature and I try to bring some small piece of that into my designs. I find that each tree has a story to tell, a snapshot into its unique life. My designs incorporate and harness the knots, splits, rot, spalting, special grain and sculpting done by insects, wind and weather. At times I also highlight these &quot;imperfections&quot; with inlaid shells and stone to bring more attention to them. This approach combined with exceptional craftsmanship allows me to create timeless, beautiful work for any space.
&lt;b&gt;JENNY WU&lt;/b&gt;
Jenny Wu is an artist and educator. Her work acknowledges the sensational and perceptual properties of materiality and then transforms the materials from their original forms and purpose to present them within new contexts. Her work has been reviewed by the Washington Post. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums including Denise Bibro Fine Art, Katzen Museum, Huntington Museum of Art, Reece Museum, Vilnius Academy of Arts in Lithuania, and CICA Museum in South Korea. 
&lt;b&gt;JOSHUA SMITH&lt;/b&gt;
Working in a vortex of color and often on over twenty varying sizes of canvas at a time, Smith, not unlike the dreams he credits with inspiring his work, paints in a fever of remembrance, memory, mysticism and metaphor.
Taking clues from architecture and religion, Smith&#x27;s paintings are a reflection of art and faith.
The US American master of oil painting Joshua Smith translates his imagination on to canvas. Through the medium of painting, Smith developed his own language which speaks of fantasy and nature, blending surrealism into the physical world, with playful imagery and fragments of playful subject matters. His paintings on canvas often presents landscapes with chairs, birds, butterflies and clouds, an imaginaire world where beings are either dreaming or existing in a parallel world, a virtual universe in which dreams and reality fuse.
Joshua Smith reminisces the childhood experiences, where we fantasize our surroundings, where the sky is the limit. In this sense Smith&#x27;s work is like a journey through some unknown metaphysical reality, in belief of the omnipotence of the (day) dream. As if to emphasize the landscapes, birds and butterflys extreme sensitivity, the colors are overlaying like powder. These colors remain in delicate, nuanced and atmospheric style. The paintings&#x27; dense, fragile surfaces and areas of multichromatic richness recall to ancient wall frescos.
Joshua was born in New Bedford MA. in 1973. Joshua grew up in Oakland CA. as the only child of Interior designers. A graduate of the Hartford Art School, University of Hartford (Connecticut) with a Masters in painting, Smith first studied at the Laguna College of Art &amp; Design. With over 30 group exhibitions and more than 20 solo exhibitions in the past 10 years, Smith was awarded the prestigious Best New SOLO Artist at the New York International Art Expo 2007. Joshua has exhibited at the Carousel Du Louvre with the Societe Nationale des beaux artes in 2012.
Smith was awarded with the Fine Art Medal for the painting &quot;The Hiding Place&quot; at European Société of Arts Science and Lettres Paris (2012). He was involved in numerous projects and lecturing as Art Instructor at The Guilford Handcraft Center, Art Professor at The Hartford Art School and Exhibition Curator at Nathan J Gallery.
Joshua currently lives with his wife and three children in Southern California.
