How do ‘Advanced Practices’ in the arts explore, invent and restage knowledge formats?

With Irit Rogoff, Bridget Crone, Adnan Madani, Joni Zhu, Ofri Cnaani and Francesca Lazzarini.‘Advanced Practices’ - also the title of Visual Cultures’ newest PhD programme - emerged in response to the research turn in the arts. Here, artistic activity is propelled by exploring, inventing and restaging knowledge formats. This new modality follows on from our earlier focus on Curatorial/Knowledge that perceived the curatorial as the creation of events of knowledge, rather than displays of art works. Subsequently, the immense turn to research in the arts and to epistemic invention across the humanities and social sciences, has required an expansion of that original framework. Thus, in Advanced Practices we ask: ‘how can artistic practices rewrite the relations between different bodies of knowledge that rarely meet, and how can we engage these by working with them rather than studying them?’.Our work in Advanced Practices joins numerous initiatives exploring new research paradigms, foremost the ‘European Forum for Advanced Practices’ with which our department is closely involved.This event is associated with our ‘Curating and Institutional Practice’ research cluster in which we think about the assembly and display of artistic and other socio-cultural practices in and beyond the institutional contexts that often frame them. We pay attention to the ways in which curatorial practices are shaped by institutional and social contexts and to how, in turn, they come to shape knowledge. We consider the curatorial as a place from which to investigate museum histories and structures, past and present exhibition practices, and the dispersal of curatorial activity away from the institutions that grounded them historically and onto the open platforms of social engagements and public assembly. We imagine the role that cultural practices might play in re-shaping institutions away from problematic institutional histories and cultures. Acknowledging the global proliferation of curatorial activity, our research goes beyond tracking contemporary exhibition-making. Instead, we think the curatorial in terms of its potential to rewrite power relations and values within public culture. BiographiesIrit Rogoff is a writer, educator, curator and organizer. She is Professor of Visual Culture at Goldsmiths, University of London, a department she founded in 2004. Rogoff works at the meeting ground between contemporary practices, politics and philosophy. Her current work is on new practices of knowledge production and their impact on modes of research, under the title of “Becoming Research” (forthcoming).Bridget Crone is a curator and writer. Focusing on the body in material and speculative terms, her work explores questions of “liveness” and the image in relation to performance theory/ practice, and the changing relations of body, technology and ecology.Adnan Madani is an artist, writer and curator interested in contemporary subjectivities in relation to philosophies of globalization, religious/secular life and intercultural encounter. His focus is on the work of Jean-Luc Nancy, Wittgenstein, Talal Asad and the ethics of esoteric Islam as developed by Massignon. Other areas of specialisation include contemporary South Asian art and popular urban cultures in Pakistan.Ofri Cnaani is an artist and educator, currently living in London. She works in time-based media, performances, and installations. Her work has appeared at Tate Britain, UK; Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC; Inhotim Institute, Brazil; PS1/MoMA, NYC; BMW Guggenheim Lab, NYC; Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna. Cnaani is a PhD researcher and Associate Lecturer at the Visual Cultures Department, Goldsmiths, UoL.Francesca Lazzarini is an independent curator, living and working between London and Italy. Through research-based and collaborative projects her practice investigates how images can activate new processes of signification and contribute to reimagining the world. She runs the artist-in-residence program AiR Trieste and is part of POIUYT, a platform for image-based research. She is currently PhD student in Advanced Practices at the Visual Cultures Department, Goldsmiths.Joni Zhu is a curatorial researcher and practitioner, with projects engaging contemporary art, critical theory, and popular cultural studies. Her PhD investigates China’s socio-techno-economic development in relation to globalised capital, the condition of cyber-proletariat, and the constitution of a new subaltern space.Image: Liere Vergara, Dispositifes of touching, Morocco, 2017. This series takes a fresh look at the issues, insights and strategies that are emerging in the transdisciplinary field of visual culture today, a field that we understand as a meeting ground between creative practices, the philosophical and the political. During Spring 2021, our contributors will report from terrain relating to five of our eight departmental research clusters: Spatial Practice and Architecture; Curating and Institutional Practice; Technologies of Image and Sound; Culture, Memory, Futurity; Philosophy, Visual Theory, and Political Aesthetics. Underlying these investigations are broad questions about why and how visual culture matters in the context of contemporary global challenges — in terms of the modes of attention and levels of investigation our methodologies bring into play, for instance, or by enlarging our capacities to locate sites for potential change within unpromising scenarios, or by engaging aesthetically as well as critically in what the artist and organiser Makoto Fujimura has called “culture care”.
