Advanced Lean Training

This 2-session (7 day-total plus intersession), interactive certificate workshop uses experiential, hands-on learning techniques to guide participants in practicing process improvement knowledge and skills. Throughout the learning experience, participants receive value-added coaching and performance feedback provided by expert healthcare instructors versed in clinical and administrative process improvement excellence.
Time Commitment
Session 1: Tuesday March 17, 2020 - Friday March 20, 2020
Session 2: Monday May 18, 2020 - Wednesday May 20, 2020
Significant time outside of class required for pre and post-intersession assignments at your organization.
This workshop will give you an understanding of
How the principles, tools, and methods of the Virginia Mason Production System® support improving patient care, including:
- How a unified improvement management system supports quality infrastructures, goal alignment and continuous system learning and transparency.
- The importance of distinguishing between value-added and non-value-added activities.
- Root causes of errors and how they relate to delays in patient care.
- Utilization of rapid testing cycles to improve processes.
- Visual tools like value stream maps and process flow charts that communicate the patient experience.
- Different types of demand and how to match your staffing resources to meet them.
- The benefits and application of the principles of continuous flow.
- How the concept of autonomous maintenance supports continuous flow.
After this workshop, you will be able to
- Utilize the advanced skills necessary to teach, coach and mentor the principles, methods and tools of the Virginia Mason Production System®.
- Add value and solve common problems inherent in modern healthcare.
- Cultivate others to lead improvements and engage your workforce to produce lasting results.
- Demonstrate standardized observation techniques and strategies to engage staff in improvement methods.
- Observe processes from the patient’s perspective while identifying value-added activities.
- Set the stage for a unified, infrastructural approach, positioned to accelerate value-added changes in your organization.
Introduction & Preparation
- Introductory 1-hour webinar (approximately 30 days prior to Session 1)
- Prerequisite reading
- Study questions completed
Session 1
- 4 days classroom-based learning
- Learning activities and application exercises
- Preparation for homework assignments for which you will identify and improve one of your own processes (practical application to be completed at your organization)
Intersession
- Suggested time required to complete assignments at your organization amounts to approximately 50% of your workweek
- 1-hour webinar check-in conducted with sensei (approximately 4 weeks after Session 1)
- Completion of all assignments necessary prior to Session 2 attendance
Session 2
- 3 days on site (approximately 6-8 weeks after Session 1)
- Learning activities and application exercises
- Final evaluation of learning and demonstration of ability to apply tools and methods for lean improvement
