This training gives you the skills you need to reach out and provide initial support to adults who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem and help connect them to appropriate care.

Learners will complete a 2-hour, self-paced online course, and participate in a 5.5-hours, instructor-led in-person training.

The course covers:

  • Common signs and symptoms of mental health challenges.
  • Common signs and symptoms of substance use challenges.
  • How to interact with a person in crisis.
  • How to connect a person with help.
  • Expanded content on trauma, substance use and self-care.

Learn how to respond with the Mental Health First Aid Action Plan (ALGEE ):

  • Assess for risk of suicide or harm.
  • Listen nonjudgmentally.
  • Give reassurance and information.
  • Encourage appropriate professional help.
  • Encourage self-help and other support strategies.

This training is offered by Safe & Sound Hillsborough in partnership with the Children's Board of Hillsborough County. It is FREE and open to the public thanks to a grant provided by BayCare.

Participants must live or work in Hillsborough County.

Mental Health First Aid USA is managed, operated, and disseminated by the National Council for Behavioral Health.
