About this event

Adult Mental Health First Aid (AMHFA) teaches people how to recognize signs of mental health or substance use challenges in adults ages 18 and older, how to offer and provide initial help, and how to guide a person toward appropriate care if necessary.

Topics covered include anxiety, depression, psychosis and addictions.

Once you are certified in Adult Mental Health First Aid, you will be able to:

  • Identify the common signs and symptoms of mental health challenges.
  • I dentify the common signs and symptoms of substance use challenges.
  • Interact with a person in crisis.
  • Connect a person with help.
  • Reduce stigma.
  • Use a 5-step action plan to help a person who may be facing a mental health problem or crisis, such as suicide.

Participants earn a three-year certification upon completion.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a cost for the training?

Not at all! Thanks to a grant from the Florida Blue Foundation, we can offer these training sessions for FREE to anyone who is 18 years or older.

This training is only for people who work in the mental health field, right?

This training is inclusive for all! It's designed to educate about mental health and illness, reduce stigma, raise awareness, and improve communication skills. Join us to learn and support mental health.

Someone close to me recently died by suicide, should I take this course?

If you have recently suffered a loss due to suicide, we recommend that you consider waiting before taking this course. The content may be sensitive and emotionally challenging. Please take the necessary time and we look forward to having you join us when you can fully participate.

I don’t have access to a microphone or camera, can I still participate in the training?

Yes! While active participation is required throughout the training, participants who do not have access to a camera or microphone can participate via the Zoom Chat.

I know other people attending the training, can we attend the instructor-led portion together?

Due to audio issues that cause an echo when participants log on as a group, we highly recommend each participant log on to the training using their own device in their own private space.

How do I get access to my Self-Paced Pre-Work?

Instructions on how to access your Self-Paced Pre-Work will be sent to you via email within 7 days of registering for the course. Please check your inbox and junk folders for an email entitled ‘Access to Pre-Work for Adult MHFA’.

I forgot to complete the pre-work; can I still attend the training?

Unfortunately, completion of the pre-work is required to participate in the training. There will be plenty of other trainings on the Talkable Communities Calendar you can sign up for!

I completed my pre-work, but now can’t attend the course. Can my pre-work be transferred?

Unfortunately, pre-work cannot be transferred to a new course date. You will have to complete the pre-work again when you register for another course date.

What if I can’t attend the entire training?

Participants are required to attend the entire training course to receive the certification. However, we have a variety of dates and times available to accommodate your schedule.

Can you offer private training for my group?

Absolutely! If you have a group of 15 people or more, please visit our website at https://www.talkablecommunities.org/amhfa and fill out our private training request form.

What if I have more questions?

Feel free to email us at info@talkablecommunities.org if you have any additional questions. We’re happy to help!

Do I need to turn on my camera during the training?

We strongly encourage having your camera on throughout the training, if possible. Our training courses are designed to be interactive and experiential, not just lecture-style. Having your camera on helps create a more engaging and inclusive learning environment for all participants.
