Adrian Bermeo’s solo exhibition No Need To Reminisce, at Liv Gallery in East Village, Manhattan, offers an introspective look towards censorship and cultural erasure. The spirit-driven imagery, to what Bermeo refers to as “abstract ancestors”, voices an urgency of honoring and preserving familial narratives and histories amidst recent political intents of undermining diversity, inclusion, and the integrity of historical archives—referring to executive orders targeting overtly marginalized people in the U.S. Repelling from divisive actions against equity and progress, in relation to America’s inevitable ties of emigration and founding religious freedoms, the collection of calligraphic figures act as a testament to the fact that our elders, our truths, and our identities are never lost; but transition. No Need To Reminisce expands on a collective presence of communal experiences not by looking back, but by acknowledging one’s existing lineage as a living ethos.

The series of works made with unconventional brushes and improvisational gestures—using acrylic, ink, spray paint, and coffee grounds—call to the artist's own relationships with graffiti and Hip-Hop subcultures; dealing with a need for grounding and revival in light of a digital age and misinformation. Composed of folkloric symbolism, and scratched messaging of personal commentary, Bermeo’s appointed pathfinders are directed to the viewer with offerings of reflection: What matters most? Who tells the story of you? Why should others care? Let’s honor and learn from each other’s stories, together.

This exhibition marks Bermeo’s first solo show with the gallery, and is in honor of his own Puerto Rican descendants who arrived at Delancey Street in Lower East Side, Manhattan, in the early 1900’s.
