David N. Hoffman, Lecturer in the Discipline of Bioethics

David N. Hoffman is a health care lawyer and clinical ethicist in New York, where he is a Lecturer in Bioethics and full-time core faculty member of the Columbia University Master’s Program in Bioethics. He is also a Clinical Assistant Professor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine where he teaches in the areas of law, medicine and ethics. He also serves as the Chief Compliance Officer for Carthage Area Hospital. Prior to joining Carthage Area Hospital, he served as General Counsel and Vice President for Ethics & Compliance at hospitals and other provider organizations in the New York metropolitan area. He also currently works as a clinical ethics consultant for the Visiting Nurse Service of New York-Hospice Program. Hoffman has provided counsel to hospitals, medical centers and individual practitioners in: governance, mergers, affiliations, commercial transactions, medical litigation, bio-ethical decision-making and regulatory matters. He has served on and advised hospital ethics committees and institutional review boards. Mr. Hoffman has written on a variety of healthcare subjects including use of medical imaging technology in litigation, equal protection rights of physicians, and regulatory responses to the emerging physician shortage. He is a volunteer panel attorney for the Surrogate Decision-making Committee of the New York State Department of Health, Commission on Quality of Care, and a member of the Board of Directors of End of Life Choices, New York, Inc. and The Completed Life Initiative, Inc

Mr. Hoffman served as the Chair of the Committee on Bio-ethical Issues of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York (ABCNY), and as a member of the Committee on Professional Ethics of the New York State Bar Association, where he was the principal author of the committee's opinion on internet-based attorney client matching services. He previously served as the legislative liaison for the Special Committee on Medical Malpractice at ABCNY, where he authored the Association's policy statement on the confidentiality of the National Practitioner Databank. He also chaired the ABCNY Sub-Committee on human transplant organ procurement.

Mr. Hoffman completed the pilot post-graduate program in Bioethics and the Medical Humanities at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He is a member of the New York State Bar Association Health Law Section, American Health Lawyers Association, Health Care Compliance Association and the American Society of Bioethics and Humanities. Mr. Hoffman is a frequent lecturer on the interactions between law, medicine and ethics. He is admitted to practice in the New York state and federal southern and eastern district courts.

Jorge Rivera-Agosto, Esq., MS, HEC-C, Health and Health Insurance Associate Counsel, New York State Senate; Course Associate, Bioethics M.S. program, Columbia University

Jorge Rivera is the New York State Senate's Health and Health Insurance Associate Counsel. He is also an Associate of the Law and Bioethics course for Columbia University's Master of Science in Bioethics Program. He recently finished his Health Law and Medical Ethics Fellowship at Northwell Health. Before joining Northwell, he was a litigator in private practice. Jorge held positions in insurance companies, as well as the government. He has a Master of Science in Bioethics from Columbia University. Jorge has worked extensively with underserved communities in matters related to health care and immigration.

Julia Iyasere, Executive Director, Dalio Center for Health Justice, New York Presbyterian

Julia Iyasere, M.D., is Executive Director of the Dalio Center for Health Justice at NewYork-Presbyterian. In this role, she leads the Center’s efforts to address longstanding health disparities due to race, socio-economic differences, limited access to care, and other complex factors that impact the wellbeing of our communities disproportionately. Established in 2020, the Dalio Center for Health Justice works collaboratively with representatives from NYP, Weill Cornell Medicine, and Columbia Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons to be a leader in the understanding and improving of health equity, and to drive action that results in measurable improvements in health outcomes for all.

A native of Southern California, Dr. Iyasere moved to the East Coast to attend Yale University where she graduated with a B.S. in Molecular Biology with a focus in Neuroscience. She joined the Columbia community at Columbia Vagelos College of Physician and Surgeons (VP&S), eventually choosing to pursue a dual degree with Columbia Business School and graduating with an M.D./M.B.A in 2008. After completing her residency in Internal Medicine at Columbia, Dr. Iyasere stayed for a year as Chief Resident before joining the Division of General Medicine at Columbia in 2012. She completed a part-time fellowship in Medical Simulation at the Mary and Michael Jaharis Simulation Center at VP&S during her first year with the Division.

Dr. Iyasere brings more than a decade of experience in medicine to her new role in the Center. She was previously the Associate Chief Medical Officer for Service Lines and the Co-Director of the Care Team Office. She was also Director of the Leadership Education and Development for Physicians (LEAD) Academy, Associate Designated Institutional Official for Graduate Medical Education at NYPH, and the Associate Program Director of the Columbia Internal Medicine Residency Training Program. An Assistant Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, Dr. Iyasere continues to see patients as an internist in the Section for Hospital Medicine.

Danurys (Didi) Sanchez, Project Coordinator, Washington Heights- Hamilton Heights-Inwood Columbia Aging Project (WHICAP)

Mrs. Danurys (Didi )Sanchez is currently a Senior Research Staff Associate at the Taub Institute for Research on Alzheimer’s disease and the Aging Brain and has been an aging researcher at Columbia University for the past twenty years. For the past fifteen years, she has been the Project Coordinator of a longitudinal study on memory and aging, the Washington Heights-Hamilton Heights-Inwood Community Aging Project (WHICAP), a community-based longitudinal study of aging and dementia which began enrolling patients in 1989 and has followed more than 8,000 residents over 65 years of age.

As the project coordinator since 2007, Ms. Sanchez has led initiatives to engage the Spanish-speaking and African American community in AD research, dissemination, and education on brain health. As she became more involved in community education, one of her most striking revelations was the limited knowledge on advance care planning throughout the target communities. Ms. Didi Sanchez is currently enrolled in the Masters' program in Bioethics at Columbia University's School of Professional Studies and endeavors to improve communication on end-of-life decision-making between physicians and patients through an ethical framework based on trust, professionalism, and compassionate care.
