<h3>About Our Presenters</h3><h3> </h3>Wayne Grau, Director, NCARTWayne started his career in the Home Medical Equipment industry in 1990 when he went to work for Pride Mobility Products. Wayne was a regional sales manager, and he continued to be promoted and assumed new responsibilities that included legislative affairs. Wayne was promoted to Director of Rehab Industry Affairs and began working exclusively with Complex Rehab companies. He was also appointed to the National Coalition of Rehab and Assistive Technology (NCART) board of directors.Wayne left Pride Mobility Products to work on a congressional campaign in 2008. After the campaign, he went to work for a group purchasing organization (GPO). The MED Group was purchased by a larger healthcare GPO, and Wayne was asked to lead their legislative efforts across many post-acute care industries.Wayne finished his MBA in healthcare at Baylor University and assumed a new position with MK Battery in sales, marketing, and legislative affairs. After a successful period with MK Battery, Wayne was asked to lead NCART. He is excited to work exclusively with Complex Rehab Manufacturers, Providers, and the individuals we serve using CRT equipment. Karla Sonderland, OTKarla Sonderland graduated with a master's degree in Occupational Therapy from the University of Mary in North Dakota. She has 20 years of experience with a focus on individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. She brings to the team her knowledge and understanding of providing 24-hour care to individuals with multiple caregivers as well as helping individuals transition to alternate living arrangements with optimal assistive technology to ensure their safety and participation. Karla lives with her husband and three children in Iowa and manages the Midwest Clinical Education program. Alex Chesney, OTR, ATP/SMSAlex Chesney is the clinical sales manager of the Midwest South Region for Quantum Rehab. She provides educational services as an occupational therapist, assistive technology professional and seating and mobility specialist. Alex graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a bachelor’s degree in multidisciplinary studies and a minor in psychology in 2011. She earned her master’s in occupational therapy from Texas Woman’s University in 2013. Alex practiced occupational therapy in a top neurological inpatient rehabilitation center in Houston, TX, treating those with traumatic spinal cord injuries and various neurodegenerative diseases.As a clinician, Alex prescribed advanced seating and mobility technologies and served as a primary education resource for best practices within neurological rehabilitation. Alex previously served as a committee chair for the Academy of Spinal Cord Injury Professionals and continues involvement as a committee member. She is the vice president and occupational therapy coordinator for Rehabilitation Services Volunteer Project, providing free neurological therapy services to those underserved in the Texas area. Rusty Jones, ATPRusty Jones is a RESNA-certified Assistive Technology Professional (ATP) who has worked in the complex rehabilitation technology industry for more than 25 years. As a previous member of the advisory council for the Oklahoma Healthcare Authority, Rusty has been a long-time advocate for the continued care and reimbursement of those Oklahomans who need assistive technologies.Originally working with a durable medical equipment company that served patients on home oxygen, Rusty eventually founded his own company in 2000. It was in this successful venture that he found his true passion: working with those who need quality assistive equipment that keeps them moving. Rusty joined Action Seating &amp; Mobility in 2014.Rusty has built countless relationships and friendships with clients and helped countless people with disabilities find the equipment that gives them the freedom and independence to not only be mobile, but that allows them to continue to work, be involved in the community, and enjoy life to its fullest.Rusty attended Northeastern State University majoring in Electronic Engineering and attended Respiratory Therapy School at College of the Ozarks graduating with a degree as a Respiratory Care Practitioner. Heather Price, OTR, ATP/SMSHeather Price, OTR, ATP/SMS, is a Regional Manager at Stealth Products. She also provides clinical education to therapists and DME providers under the Quantum Rehab education team. Previously, in clinical practice, Heather gained experience in wheelchair seating, positioning, and mobility at two nationally ranked rehab hospitals, TIRR Memorial Hermann in Houston and Shirley Ryan AbilityLab in Chicago. At TIRR, Heather was an Occupational Therapist on the inpatient spinal cord injury team. She gained extensive experience in custom wheelchair prescription, training, and seating and positioning. As the Wheelchair Skills and Management Specialist at SRALab, Heather helped develop a new program for inpatient clients of all ages with a variety of diagnoses. The program featured extensive wheelchair trials, evaluations, and instruction on advanced wheelchair skills. Dan Fedor, Director, Reimbursement &amp; Education, U.S. RehabDan Fedor has been in the HME industry for more than 25 years and currently serves as the compliance director for VGM and US Rehab members. He is available to assist members with documentation requirements, audits, and compliance for mobility products. He is a graduate of Penn State University where he earned a BS in Economics with a Business minor. Dan joined VGM in 2014, and before that, was the director of Education and Compliance for Pride Mobility Products Corp. for 13 years. Prior to joining Pride, Dan served as a senior manager for Professional Relations and Electronic Data Interchange for the Jurisdiction A DME MAC (United Healthcare) for nearly six years.

Day 1 (Thursday, Oct 24)

Welcome

It is important for clinicians and therapists to stay up to date on legislative issues that can affect funding and equipment availability for clients.  State House and Senate sessions can bring small-seeming changes to Medicaid funding that have major consequences for people who rely on assistive and rehab technology. This course will discuss issues regarding overall funding and coverage, repair and service reform, and ways therapists and clinicians can work with lawmakers and industry representatives for their clients’ interests. The session will end with a Q&A for the  presenter.

Legislative Changes and Updates Affecting the Complex Rehab Industry (1 hr)

A child participates in many activities throughout a 24-hour period. The wheelchair or a mobility system is often addressed providing optimal transportation, opportunity for self-initiated movement, and positioning. Evidence has demonstrated the benefits of providing positioning intervention when a child is not in the wheelchair. Positions focusing on lying, sitting, and standing will be addressed. A 24-hour postural care program addresses all activities the child might be involved in. This session addresses options for alternative positioning, toileting, bathing, and sleeping. Physiological and anatomical theoretical principles will be addressed incorporating how equipment can address an individual’s postural needs while promoting function and participation throughout a full 24-hour day.


Positioning for Participation and Function: 24-hour Postural Support (1 hr)

Join us for a recap of the typical development of gait and why each stage is crucial for a child’s developing brain and musculoskeletal system. Explore the numerous benefits of encouraging early active mobility in children with additional needs, especially regarding hip joint and muscle development, and review the latest evidence surrounding walking frames. Evaluate the pros and cons of different styles of walking frames. Learn about using an upright walker and the wide range of new features and accessories to suit every need can maximize child exploration, interaction, and participation.  Case studies will demonstrate how using a gait trainer in clinical practice can put the clinical theory to the test!

Fundamentals of Walking My Way (1 hr)

This is a 1-hour course designed to enhance knowledge and clinical application of clinical considerations for rigid wheelchair prescription. The course reviews the client screening and wheelchair evaluation process for rigid wheelchair prescription. Additionally, participants will review clinical decision- making associated with pertinent anatomic, postural, and biomechanical considerations to optimize wheelchair fit.

Manufacturer World Tour

Individuals with chronic medical conditions and long-term disabilities who have a permanent need for a wheelchair require a comprehensive, detailed evaluation of their physical, functional and environmental needs to allow clinicians and ATP suppliers to make appropriate Assistive Technology recommendations for a successful outcome. This course will examine the algorithmic approach when deciding on power mobility base selection while also discussing key performance parameters and capabilities of power options that lead to equipment recommendations specific to group categories and clinical implications. This framework will provide clinicians with the tools necessary to effectively evaluate and document the medical need for Power mobility intervention and assist the supplier ATP in matching an individual’s identified needs to the technology interventions.

Deciding on Power: Clinical Implications and Client Considerations (1 hr)

Power wheelchairs are designed to augment function when functional mobility is compromised or lost. However, this is not the only benefits that the power mobility systems can provide. There are critical components of this system that also facilitate or improve the end user’s ability to complete functional activities/ADLs, support their physical and mental health, provide independent repositioning for pressure relief, increase tolerance of the seated position, and increase the overall satisfaction of the equipment. These critical components are known as power positioning devices. While there are several different types of power positioning products on the market, this presentation will focus on the clinical benefits of power adjustable seat height and anterior tilt.

Day 2 (Friday, Oct 25)

Often times, the deciding factor in whether a person gets a much-needed piece of equipment or not comes down to whether it is approved by their insurance. Therapists and clinicians can help expedite the process by clearly documenting the needs of the patient and providing all information the equipment vendor needs to submit for approval. In this course, therapists will do a demonstration evaluation with an ATP to learn what points to focus on for documentation. This approach will also address multi-software platforms and hitting all the major points across systems.

Maximizing Efficiency in Clinical Documentation (3 hrs)

Movement is a foundation of function for everyone, disabled or not. For our clients who require custom molded options, one of the drawbacks can be limiting movement to support their postural tendencies. And for some of our more active users, this may even result in functional limitations. The Tarta Custom Backrest may be an option for these clients by providing customized postural support while still allowing movement to promote function.
Additionally, current technologies for managing wheelchair clients’ postures include tilt in
space, recline systems, and back supports. Although these technologies have many benefits for our clients, seating is still a challenge for many. We know that seating postures change during the day depending on energy, functional tasks, comfort, tone, and preferences — however, it is hard to provide postural variation and movement using current technologies. EPiC Seating is a new seating system that may offer a solution for these clients.


Supporting Movement and Postural Variation w/ Tarta Backrest and EPiC Seating

There is a compliant way to do what is expected so a qualified patient can receive the mobility equipment in a timely manner. In this interactive workshop, participants will gain insight into health insurance plans documentation requirements for mobility products and related accessories including seat elevation. The instructor, a former director at Medicare, will share the internal thought process of health insurance plans which will enable therapists to provide them what they need in order to approve a claim for qualified patients. This course will teach attendees how to compliantly and efficiently complete an effective evaluation for mobility products in order to reduce the time spent on writing documentation, thus preserving your LIFE as a therapist.
