Combat experience shows that many of both civilian and law enforcement physical defensive encounters end up with one or both parties fighting from the ground. Acknowledging this fact, Active Response Training offers an innovative ground defense class.
This ground combative system will allow you to learn the skills necessary to defend yourself in the worst-case scenario when a violent criminal forces you to the ground. This is not a sport Jiu Jitsu or wrestling class. Students will learn simple, effective combat techniques that will allow them to overwhelm their adversaries and facilitate a rapid escape.
Topics covered include: ground defense positions, kicking and striking from the ground, takedowns against a standing opponent while you are on the ground, empty hand lethal force techniques, escaping from the mount and guard positions, and choke defenses. Students will also learn how to deploy weapons from a grounded position and how to defend against both firearms and edged weapons on the ground.
This will be a full day of grappling drills. While the class isn&#x27;t structured to be any type of physical beat-down session, you will be struggling with resisting partners all day long. You will likely be tired and a bit sore at the end of class. Folks who can easily stand/walk for most of the day (with structured breaks) will likely be occasionally winded, but will do fine in the class. Students who do any level of regular cardiovascular fitness training will perform without any difficulties.

I will attempt to accommodate all fitness levels. You control your level of intensity and participation in the class, but your grappling partners will need a functioning body to get their reps in. If you don&#x27;t think you can handle this level of physical activity, please don&#x27;t register for the course.
No class prerequisites or previous martial arts experience necessary. The instructor will provide training guns and training knives for the class. You are welcome to bring your own training knives and/or training guns if you wish. Please leave all live weapons in your car upon arrival.
Please pack a lunch and drinking water. We will be training on mats in an indoor air-conditioned environment. Please wear long pants (no shorts) that have at least one pocket (for training knife) and a belt so that you can secure a training firearm in your waistband. Track pants/jogging pants are acceptable for the class if you bring a belt to secure a training weapon during that period of instruction.

If you don’t grapple regularly, your knees might be sore after class. If you have knee problems, soft knee pads are recommended. Clean athletic shoes, socks, or bare feet are all acceptable in this class. There is no need for a mouthpiece or groin protection, but feel free to utilize that safety equipment if you desire. The instructor will provide all other necessary training gear.

Instructor background

Greg recently retired after serving 25 years as a police officer. During his tenure, Greg spent 13 years as the full-time tactical training officer for a central Ohio police department. In that training position, he was responsible for developing and instructing all the in-service training for his 55-officer agency. In addition to the training position, he also served as patrol officer, firearms armorer, bike patrol officer, bike patrol coordinator, sniper, and field training officer during his career.
 He instructed classes at the Tactical Defense Institute for 17 years and served as a lead instructor for TDI’s ground fighting, knife fighting, active shooter, impact weapons, and extreme close quarters shooting classes.
 Greg holds instructor, master instructor, or armorer certifications in more than 80 different weapons systems, defensive tactics programs, and law enforcement specialty topics. In addition to these instructor certifications, Greg has successfully completed more than 4,000 hours of documented formal training with the leading firearms, empty hand fighting, and edged weapons instructors in the country.
 Greg additionally served as an adjunct instructor for the Ohio Peace Officer’s Training Academy, teaching firearms, defensive tactics, bike patrol, knife defense, and physical fitness topics. He has taught firearms and self defense classes at the national and international level through The American Society of Law Enforcement Trainers, The International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors, The Rangemaster Tactical Conference, and The Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police.

One of Greg’s primary interests is training students to be more effective fighting from the ground. Greg has a background as a high-school wrestler, studied Judo in college, and has trained intensively in both Japanese and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for more than 15 years. He taught regular ground fighting classes in two different commercial martial arts schools.

Greg was certified by the state of Ohio to teach law enforcement ground fighting in all Ohio police academies. Additionally, he holds the following groundfighting/grappling instructor certifications:
