Overview:

Today’s workplace calls for the development of high-performing work teams to manage dynamic healthcare environments. While positive outcomes are the end goal, it’s impossible to get there without strong processes and collaborative relationships across and within teams. In this session, panelists will share information on the core components of high-performing teams and present strategies to design and implement collaborative work systems. The program will begin with a brief presentation by the moderator, followed by remarks from each of the panelists. The program will conclude with a 30-minute question-and-answer period.

CEO & Author of Karma Doesn't Need My Help: 11 Weekly Lessons for Leadership Success and Peace | Badlands LLC

Dr. Tom McDougal is the author of Karma Doesn’t Need My Help: 11 Weekly Lessons to Leadership Success and Peace. In 2024, after 30 years of healthcare leadership, including 23 years as a hospital CEO, Tom retired from operating hospitals and health systems. However, “retirement” is a relative term as he continues to work full-time as an author, speaker, and healthcare consultant to improve leadership success, and to drive physician alignment and strategic growth strategies. Dr. McDougal holds a Doctorate degree in Healthcare Leadership in addition to degrees including Master of Science in Healthcare Administration, Master of Business Administration, and Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management. He currently leads Badlands LLC (badlands.pro) and is a Life Fellow with ACHE.

Jon Burroughs, JD, MD, MBA, FACHE, FAAPL

Dr. Jon Burroughs is embarking upon his sixth professional career, having been a professional pianist, mountain climbing/hiking guide/author, emergency physician, healthcare administrator and governing board member, healthcare administrative expert and consultant, and now a healthcare attorney. He is a healthcare system expert and has participated in over 280 legal cases, written six healthcare administrative books (two of which were given James A. Hamilton national awards by the American College of Healthcare Executives), and serves on the national faculties of the American College of Healthcare Administration, the American Association for Physician Leadership, and the National Association Medical Staff Services. His goal is to help make healthcare a little safer.


Chad Abrams, PMD, MSA, CEMSO, FACPE

Chief of Emergency Medical Services; Florida EMS Advisory Council | Leon County Government

Chad Abrams is the Director of the Office of Public Safety and Chief of Emergency Medical Services for Leon County, Florida, where he has led the county’s nationally recognized EMS system since 2015. Under his leadership, Leon County EMS has received numerous state and national awards and has maintained continuous accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Ambulance Services since 2010. Abrams holds a master’s degree in public administration and is a graduate of the Naval Postgraduate School’s Center for Homeland Defense and Security Executive Leaders Program. He has achieved designation as a Chief EMS Officer from the Center for Public Safety Excellence and is a Fellow of the American College of Paramedic Executives. He currently serves on the boards of the Big Bend Healthcare Coalition and the National EMS Management Association and is currently appointed to the Florida Emergency Medical Services Advisory Council.


Usha Menon, PhD, RN, FAAN, FSBM

Dean of USF College of Nursing, Distinguished University Health Professor, Senior Associate VP; Community Outreach and Engagement, TGH Cancer Institute | USF Health

Usha Menon, PhD, RN, FAAN, is Senior Associate Vice President, USF Health and Dean, USF College of Nursing. A nationally recognized leader in funded cancer control research, she has driven major initiatives to address Florida’s nursing shortage, including securing a historic $40M legislative award. Under her leadership, the College has achieved record growth and elevated national rankings. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and a member of the Sigma Theta Tau International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame. Menon also serves as Associate Director of Community Outreach and Engagement for the Tampa General Hospital Cancer Institute.
