WHY SHOULD I TAKE THIS CLASS?
- Are you a classic over-thinker?
- Do you find that you hedge your choices because you aren't sure of the writer's intent?
- Do you read comedy scripts and struggle to find the jokes?
- Do you worry that you can't discern a project's tone?
- Are you living and dying by punctuation and stage direction?
- Are you coming up with three pages of back story for every character you read?
- Do you feel you barely have enough time to memorize lines for your audition, and simply can't get too deep on any other aspects of the text?
- Do you feel like you consistently miss moments or information in a script?
- Do you struggle to confidently break down audition sides, particularly if the information provided seems limited or vague?
The list of text analysis traps are vast. The key to confident, successful self-tapes lies in this very important, (yet underutilized,) actor tool!
During the month of May, Erica and Cara will guide actors through script analysis exercises, allowing participants to directly apply their text practicum to self-tapes.
- Exercise #1 - Actors will break down four different scripts in exercises guided by Cara and Erica, using specific questions to elicit thoughts and responses. All class answers will be submitted and posted (anonymously) for review to learn from one another’s experiences of breaking down text. Cara and Erica will then share their thoughts and analysis on the text.
- Exercise #2 - Actors will receive a Drama Guest Star scene and some guided text questions. They will break down the scene and then tape it. Actors will receive written feedback from both Cara and Erica on their tape.
- Exercise #3 - Actors will receive a Comedy Guest Star scene and some guided text questions. They will break down the scene and then tape it. Actors will receive written feedback from both Cara and Erica on their tape.
- Actors will have access to an online folder where all class work can be accessed. Erica and Cara will also post resourceful articles and references, along with helpful videos full of examples and extra information.
- Class will wrap up with a live Zoom, where Erica and Cara will answer questions and provide some final thoughts.
- Requirements: 1. A way to self-tape and 2. A healthy attitude about being challenged!

The word from former students:
Wanted to take a moment to say a huge THANK YOU to you both for such an incredible class the past two weeks. I have gone to a handful of classes with casting directors, and I have never left with my notebook so full of notes. You were both incredibly gracious with your feedback and thoughts, and they were SO HELPFUL.
- Julianne L.
It was such a fun and informational 4 weeks. You both have such an amazing breadth of knowledge that I came away with something new every week. Also, I've taken several Zoom classes since going online became our new normal and this was, hands-down, the best use of the Zoom medium I've taken part in.
- Scott C.
Thank you so much for a phenomenal class the last four weeks. I also wanted to note how unique I found your class, and not just because of the self tape format. Taking class with people who are engaging week after week, speak candidly about the industry, and offer genuine constructive feedback was such a treat!! So, thank you. Honestly, it tops my list of classes, and... it was on Zoom!
- Zoey B.
Just wanted to send an extra thank you to you absolute QUEENS of casting! You woke me up in ways that I wasn’t expecting. My brain is on fire and I’m happily uncomfortable!! Feeling inspired, awake and ready for more. Bring on the learning! THANK YOU.
- Jen E.
I want to thank you SO MUCH for the awesome self-tape class. It was SO REFRESHING to get feedback on the self-tapes and to be able to ask questions in such a warm and friendly zoom room. We had such a great group, too. Seeing everyone’s work was really inspiring. Thank you for putting it all together and running such a great room. I leave class with a huge adrenaline shot of energy, excitement and inspiration.
- Sara G.
I was thinking about your class today and just wanted to send you a bit of gratitude. I am truly so glad that I took the Co-Star class with you. I feel like it is already impacting my auditions and making me feel like I have more power in auditioning than I previously thought. So many of the technical tips you provided - like the difference between audition speed and set speed are easy adjustments and I can really feel the difference. And honestly, I needed to hear the idea that if someone is making bold "different" choices, it isn't because they are trying to do that, that is what is authentic to them. That advice resonated with me in a way I hadn't heard before and I feel like it has allowed me to focus so much more on just bringing myself to auditions.
- Camille C.
Class schedule:
This is an asynchronous class that uses guided exercises to break down scripts and apply that analysis to self-tapes. Actors will need to complete exercises by a certain date, but the work is largely done on their own time. Participants will receive written feedback on self-tapes from both Erica and Cara. This is a great class for people with busy schedules!
