About this event

Class Description:

This accessible yoga class explores mindful movements and adaptive asana (yoga poses) using the support of a chair or wheelchair. Each class moves at a gentle pace and includes mindfulness, breathing practices, and guided relaxation to reduce tension and promote comfort. Join this compassionate community that supports you exactly as you are today.

Please arrive with a stable chair (preferably no wheels or armrests) or a wheelchair and any supportive items you may want/need. Recommended items to bring: 1 - 2 blankets.

Who is this class for?

This course has been developed to support everyone! This includes people with or without disabilities, folks with physical concerns and/ or chronic conditions such as chronic pain or illness, and anyone who wants to explore mindful movement in an inclusive and accepting community. Knowing that challenges or symptoms can change within minutes, each class offers options to support you as you are. Pacing and rest are always encouraged!

Class Details:

Classes are virtual and FREE. Each class takes place on MONDAYS from 12:00 to 12:45pm EST. Yoga class is 45 minutes long. The instructor will keep the space open for another 5 - 15 minutes for questions and community time.

Please register for EVERY class you’d like to attend. Zoom login and other info will become available upon registration.

This program is hosted by the Georgetown Lombardi Arts & Humanities Program at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C.

Accessibility:

This class is for people who could benefit from practicing yoga from a seat. Kaykay will guide the class from her manual wheelchair and use invitational language to offer variations suitable for all practitioners. Classes are designed through a disability justice lens, with trauma-informed and LGBTQ+ friendly considerations. All classes are closed captioned and follow the structure below:

Centering

Introduction of Mindfulness & Breath

Gentle movement

Variations of asana (yoga postures)

Guided meditation

Closure and optional sharing/questions
