The monthly accessibility meet-up for Accessibility DC is at Blackboard here in Washington, DC. The event will be on March 1, 2018, from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM. Event registration will close at noon on Wednesday, Febauary 28, 2018, so Blackboard has time to inform building security who is going to attend. You will not be let into the building if you are not on the list. 
<H2>Logistics</H2>
Attendees MUST register for the event through EventBrite with their first and last name to be added to the attendee list. Present a valid, photo ID upon entry into the building. No exceptions will be made. This event is free and open to the public. Registration will close the day before.

<H2>About the Meetup </H2>
AccessibilityDC is a monthly meetup that will meet the first Thursday of every month except this month. The event is a chance for people who are interested in Accessibility to get together and share information.  They could be Web developers, designers, content people, photographers, videographers, who are interested in web accessibility or adaptive technology users who have a daily experience of accessibility issues are all welcome to attend.

6:30 PM - 6:45 PM - Welcome everyone.
6:45 PM - 8:30 PM - For this month’s Accessibility DC meetup Karl Groves of Tenon.io will talk about "Data Mining Accessibility". 
<H3>Description </H3>
Everyone agrees the best approach to accessibility issues is to avoid them in the first place. What if we could predict problems before they happen?  Tenon wants to find out. Informed buying decisions—such as researching a product’s accessibility before buying the product or adopting a technology—is the true path to saving money and time on auditing and remediating issues after the system has been deployed. Using a variety of data sources, it is possible to weigh how accessible a site is while also identifying which technologies it uses. With such approaches, Tenon is analyzing the accessibility of the Web and we're using that data to correlate each technology to its respective error data. The aggregated data can be used to determine the error rates, error densities, and categories of errors. This information can allow organizations to make informed decisions when they choose which technologies to use on their sites. There are many ways that the implementation of technologies can affect the accessibility of the resulting interface. The use of large-scale data gathering will provide the opportunity for the impact of implementation differences from being a barrier to effective analysis. The data that we gathered in this process confirms how pervasive accessibility problems are on the web. It can also show risk patterns that can help organizations learn about potential accessibility problems related to specific technologies before they adopt those technologies. This presentation will discuss this ongoing research effort, including our current findings and our future research plans.

<H2>Talk Ideas</H2>
We are always looking for people or even groups to lead a talk or presentation about anything accessibility related for the group. Please contact <A HREF="mailto:info@accessibilitydc.org" TARGET="_blank" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">info@accessibilitydc.org</A> with any discussion ideas you would be willing to do.
<H2>Future Events</H2>
Some of the things we need to think about are what kind of talks/discussion, events, mini-workshops, etc. we want to have. Recently, I saw that the Chicago Accessibility meet-up had planned a workshop on how to do screen reader testing. They were going to break the group up by those that wanted to learn a PC screen reader (NVDA) and  VoiceOver (Apple). My thoughts were to have a total of three screen reader workshops. One general one where we all go over the screen reader JAWS to get an idea how screen readers work and what they can do and anyone that had the software can play around. The next one we would be to do both NVDA and VoiceOver for the desktop since those are both free. The final, workshop would be for mobile with both VoiceOver (Apple) and TalkBack (Android). We can work on this idea more at the meet-up and the three events/workshops would not have to be one right after the other and we could have other talks in between them. To fully participate, you would need to bring your laptop or mobile device depending on the workshop with you along with the software loaded and a pair of headphones, so it doesn't get too noisy in the room. There are a few other ideas I have but I want to hear from you. Please respond back to this e-mail with ideas if you can't make it.
