About this event

Accelerating Policy Action for Development, Climate and Food in Kenya

Co-organized by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) Kenya and the SDSN FELD Programme, in collaboration with the Institute of Climate Change and Adaptation (ICCA)|Hosted by SDSN Kenya

Thursday, 7 September 2023, 9AM - 5PM | University of Nairobi Towers

Join the Sustainable Development Solutions Network for an interactive policy workshop with other scientists, policy experts and implementers to discuss practical solutions and collaboration to advance sustainable development and climate adaptation in Kenya. The workshop supports a strong development perspective to climate discussions in Africa and Kenya, and serves as a stepping stone to the second Kenya Sustainable Development Summit in 2024.

The workshop is co-organised by the Food, Environment, Land and Development (FELD) programme at SDSN Paris, and the SDSN Kenya network; hosted by the University of Nairobi, with support from the Robert Bosch Stiftung.

The event takes place in Nairobi during Africa Climate Week in September 2023 with the aim of bringing together scientists and experts, community leaders and activists, local and national government, civil society leaders and development practitioners in the spirit of the Sustainable Development Goals and the motto of “Leaving no-one behind”.

The context of the Africa Climate Week coincides with reaching the mid-point of the SDGs and the 2023 agenda, at a time when severe weather conditions and climate impacts are affecting large parts of the world, including large parts of northern Kenya. During the workshop, participants will discuss opportunities and a shared agenda for active dialogue between professionals and institutions in science/policy/practice to identify concrete measures to accelerate sustainable development and improve climate resilience in and across Kenya.

Key issues and themes discussed during the day will focus especially on the nature of challenges affecting Kenya’s development; on opportunities for pro-active and concrete science/policy/practice interface; on specific challenges for Kenya’s food systems, including sustainable land use and management, and related forest, water and environmental ecosystems. Participants will also explore and agree on concrete opportunities to engage jointly in policy dialogue with Government at national and country level, to build partnerships for climate resilience and sustainable development; and jointly identify entry points for policy engagement in the context of existing policies in Kenya through strategic education; research; innovations; technologies; advocacy and community operations that inform policy and practice.
