AAPI Policy Summit: Building Solutions for an Equitable Future

The AAPI Policy Summit will bring together AAPI leaders from various sectors to develop bold solutions for an equitable future.

Hosted by the UCLA Asian American Studies Center, Luskin School of Public Affairs, in partnership with the California AAPI Legislative Caucus (AAPILC), the AAPI Policy Summit, originally November 30, 2022, has been postponed in-person to February 10, 2023 from 8:00am - 6:00pm at the Luskin Conference Center. As we climb out of the COVID-19 Pandemic, we stand at a critical moment in history to reimagine California by developing solutions that establish more equitable institutions, policies, and systems that work towards social justice for all. The AAPI Policy Summit will bring together researchers, students, community, government, corporate, and academic leaders to have in-depth conversations about topics that are timely, shed new light on issues, and have ideas and recommendations that are actionable. In particular, how to create a future that is inclusive of Asian American and Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander communities. Breakout sessions in the works include:<ul><li>Combating Anti-Asian Hate: Addressing anti-Asian hate crimes and incidents, improving reporting, and mitigating anti-Asian racism in schools.</li><li>Addressing the Gaps in Healthcare and Mental Health: Addressing mental health, increasing food justice and security, and improving access to healthcare.</li><li>Economic Recovery: Housing, Employment, Small Businesses, and Food Insecurity: Developing solutions to economic disparities in accessing benefits and relief related to employment, housing, small business, and food insecurity resources.</li><li>Developing Inclusive Immigrant Protections and Policies: Health, economic, and social implications of COVID-19 among undocumented young adults living in California, Anti-AAPI Racism in Immigration and Criminal Law.</li><li>Reimagining the Arts, Theatre, and Hollywood: Improving recovery strategies and resources for AANHPI nonprofit arts organizations and artists, as well as diverse representation in Hollywood.</li><li>Advancing AANHPI Data Equity and Disaggregation: How can we advance more equitable data collection to ensure more comprehensive demographic data for AANHPI communities, in particular smaller populations?</li><li>Challenges and Opportunities in Implementing Ethnic Studies and Asian American Studies Requirements: Implementing curriculum requirements in California High Schools, CA State Universities, and Community Colleges</li><li>AAPI Leaders in Corporate Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: Where do AAPIs fit in the DEI discussions, especially in corporate and government sectors?</li><li>Philanthropy and Corporate Giving: How do we advance equitable giving to AAPI communities?</li><li>Addressing the Health Needs of Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Communities</li><li>T﻿ools and Strategies for Community Power Building and Electoral Politics</li></ul><h3>ABOUT THE KEYNOTE SPEAKER</h3>On April 23, 2021, Rob Bonta was sworn in as the 34th Attorney General of the State of California, the first person of Filipino descent and the second Asian-American to occupy the position.Attorney General Bonta&#x27;s passion for justice and fairness was instilled in him by his parents, who served on the frontlines of some of America&#x27;s most important social justice movements. Instilling in him the lessons they learned from the United Farm Workers and the civil rights movement, Attorney General Bonta&#x27;s parents lit a fire inside him to fight against injustice — to stand up for those who are taken advantage of or harmed. It&#x27;s why he decided to become a lawyer — to help right historic wrongs and fight for people who have been harmed. He worked his way through college and graduated with honors from Yale University and attended Yale Law School.In the State Assembly, Attorney General Bonta enacted nation-leading reforms to inject more justice and fairness into government and institutions. As the People&#x27;s Attorney, he sees seeking accountability from those who abuse their power and harm others as one of the most important functions of the job. In elected office, he has taken on powerful interests and advanced systemic change — pursuing corporate accountability, standing up for workers, punishing big polluters, and fighting racial injustice. He has been a national leader in the fight to transform the criminal justice system, banning private prisons and detention facilities in California, as well as pushing to eliminate cash bail in the state. He has led statewide fights for racial, economic, and environmental justice and worked to further the rights of immigrant families, renters, and working Californians.Prior to serving in the Assembly, Attorney General Bonta worked as a Deputy City Attorney for the City and County of San Francisco, where he represented the City and County and its employees and fought to protect Californians from exploitation and racial profiling.Born in Quezon City, Philippines, Attorney General Bonta immigrated to California with his family as an infant. He is the son of a proud native Filipino mother and a father who taught him the value of public service to his community.
