A Workshop on Mixed Models

This tutorial will cover an introduction of mixed modelling and include demonstration and practise in R and SPSS.

While mixed models are growing in popularity in the psychology and brain science field, there is still limited dissemination of some its basic concepts, such as the random effect and the sources of variance in the model. This workshop will introduce the mixed model terminology and try to separate mixed models from other methods with similar outcomes. We will guide you through running and interpreting a mixed model in R and SPSS, and practise with an example dataset. Target Audience and Prerequisites:This workshop is designed for researchers (PhD Students, Postdocs and Early Career researchers) in the field of Psychology that want to use/are using Mixed Models. The tutorial does require basic knowledge of statistical concepts that are covered in most undergrad statistical courses (such as least squares linear regression). If you want to practise with the example dataset in SPSS, you need to have SPSS (a licensed software) installed on your computer. If you do not have a license, you can use SPSS free version <a href="https://jasp-stats.org/download/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">JASP</a>, but note that the interface will be slightly different from SPSS.If you want to practice with the example dataset in R, you need to have <a href="https://cloud.r-project.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">R</a> and <a href="https://rstudio.com/products/rstudio/download/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">RStudio</a> installed on your computer (both free, follow the links to download). An expert knowledge of R is not necessary, but if you never used R before please download <a href="https://www.dropbox.com/s/a6hpemsc518x9pp/R-Tutorial-Complete-Beginner.Rmd?dl=0" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">this essential tutorial</a> and complete it before attending the workshop.
