A Workshop Exploring Alt Controllers

Overview

with Game Developer and Professor Erin Treusdell

This three-hour evening workshop will explore the role of the game controller in play, highlighting the ways that alternative controllers and control schemes can shape the play experience.

The workshop will include interactive activities involving an array of input devices, and will engage attendees with key topics including how to create novel experiences for the existing games.

Materials will involve an array of input devices, including standard gamepads, microcontroller-based button and lever boxes, and other computational inputs such as MIDI controllers. This variety allows for a variety of inputs to be used by participants and many unique ways of interacting with the same workshop.

The workshop is appropriate for novices as well as individuals with prior knowledge of the Unity Game engine.
