A Trip to the London Science Museum Flight Gallery

You are invited to the next Fly Festival event; a trip to the London Science Museum to see Jason, the beautiful de Havilland Gipsy Moth bi-plane that belonged to record breaking pilot, Amy Johnson.

In May 1930, Amy flew Jason half way more than 11,000 miles across the world, becoming the first woman to fly solo from England to Australia. It was an adventure of a life time and the flight which made her name as a record-breaking and courageous pilot.

Children will visit Jason in the Science Msueum's beautiful flight gallery and will be able to create their own personalised Amy Johnson scrap book fact files including details of Amy's flight to Australia. If weather allows we will head to the park afterwards for parachute games . Bring a picnic if you like!

The Science Museum is free entry. A £7 charge (8.30 with booking fee) will cover prep and materials for the fact file activity packs I'll put together for the children. 30 children's spaces available.

Meet 10am outside the Science Museum on Exhibition Road.

I will book a group ticket so all you need to do is just let me know to expect you and turn up. If you're a bit late you can always catch us up, we will be in the flight gallery.

This is a book ahead event ONLY.

All children must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

ACCESS: The Science Museum is wheelchair accessible but there is currently no step free access to the mezzanine level in the Flight Gallery.

Did you make a model of Jason in our last session? If you did, you're welcome to bring him along. If not and you'd like to make Jason please get in touch to request a model kit. Simpler model kits for 5-8yrs come in the post for £3plus p+p. A slightly more involved kit can be ordered as a PDF print out for £5, with accompanying You Tube tutorial. I am working with Jane Delamaine of The Amy Johnson Project to make the main festival happen 5 years from now but in the lead up to 2030, (the centenary of Amy Johnson's incredible solo flight to Australia), we are very keen to run regular festival related events for all ages. This includes workshops, talks, performances and trips to places all over, making connections and building our audiences.

My aim as co-director of the festival is to engage young children now and provide opportunities to explore Amy Johnson's world of aviation, engineering and dreaming in as many different ways as possible. We hope that as the next four/five years go by, your children will become familiar with FLY Festival and its aims for them to aspire. My aim is to see them continue to grow in their confidence as creators and engineers and by the time of the festival be ready to take part and even create and run some elements of the festival taking place at London Croydon Aerodrome Hotel and Croydon Airport! It's very, very exciting.
