This course uses a strengths-based approach and case studies to explore how individuals and families are affected by forms of structural racism and implications for individual and family therapies. Through discussion of research, role-plays regarding individual, couples, family therapy and moral/ethical scenarios, participants will gain a greater understanding of:

    • 40 different forms of structural racism
    • Ways that racism overlaps other forms of discrimination such as sexism, agism, ablism, LGBTQ, and environmental issues as interlocking forms of oppression
    • Deeper dives into specific common forms of structural racism through video interviews and film
    • Stress, health, and individual life expectancies
    • The effects of structural racism on adults, children, and families
    • Intergenerational PTSD from structural racism
    • Environmental racism and new nonhereditary mental illnesses
    • Women’s individual and family strengths and coping skills in the face of structural racism and interlocking forms of oppression
    • Ethical issues related to structural racism in individual and family therapy
    • D iversity and Inclusion
