Overview

In this 90 minute salon, together we will discuss a topic using one influential text. This month’s text will be Plato’s Meno on the Beautiful and virtue. All texts selected for salons will be in the public domain. Access to this month’s reading will be provided prior to the salon. To contribute to the discussion group, reading the text before the event is encouraged, but not required. This salon is open to people who wish for more beauty in their lives. To ensure an effective educational experience, seating will be limited to 25 attendees.

Your Dialogue Lead

Your dialogue lead for this session will be Thomas Jockin, Lecturer at University of North Georgia in Visual Art. Thomas is formerly a Lecturer at Pratt Institute, Fashion Institute of Technology, SUNY and Queens College, CUNY. He also has been a guest critic at School of Visual Arts and Parsons School of Design. He is also a Fellow at the Halkyon Thinker’s Guild where his online lecture course, The Beautiful and Virtue: A Reading of Six Platonic Dialogues is available for preorder.


Format

The salon will be broken up into 20 minute intervals in the following format:

  1. A reading of a dialogue section, followed by a summary by the dialogue lead.
  2. The floor is opened for attendees to reflect, affirm, question, or challenge the dialogue section.
  3. A summary of the attendee testimony is made by the dialogue lead.
  4. We repeat the format in the next interval.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to read the text prior to the event to attend?

No. We will re-enact the parts of the dialogue in person at each segment. However, we do encourage reading the dialogue prior to your attendance. Reading the dialogue prior and taking notes helps foster a deeper and richer experience for yourself.
