The Work and Influence of Marcus Miller
With dozens of movie scores and over 500 recording credits to his name across Jazz, R&B, and Opera, Marcus’ resume speaks for itself, and as a UNESCO Artist for Peace and changemaker, his work on social justice projects continues to be inspiring.
In 2020, Marcus created, musically produced, and posted the Lift Every Voice get out the vote event, which brought together political leaders and musical legends to encourage political participation. Additionally, he contributed to UNESCO’s United Against Racism video alongside countless industry legends, and was commissioned by Prince Albert of Monaco to create the orchestral arrangement for in Donny Hathaway’s “Someday We’ll All Be Free” video, which he also appeared in.
The year ahead continues to look just as busy for Marcus, who will release his Funk/R&B collaborative album “Basement Party” this summer. As a member of the Board Of Directors for the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz, he’ll be joining Herbie for a virtual celebration of International Jazz Day on April 30th. And as we look toward the future and the return of live events, Marcus is anticipating the return of Black Movie Music at the Hollywood Bowl, the fourth installment of the successful series (which he co-created, co-produces, arranges, and musical directs) that catalogs the rich history of music in Black film.
In 2022, Marcus composed the score for the documentary film SIDNEY for Apple TV+, produced by Oprah Winfrey, that told the story of legendary actor, filmmaker and iconic civil rights activist, Sidney Poitier.
