The Uganda Goat project aims to enrich the lives and health of children and youth living with HIV in Uganda through goat farming.

A Night for Uganda is a fundraiser to support the Uganda Goat Project. The Uganda Goat Project aims to enrich the lives and health of children and youth living with HIV in Uganda through goat farming. The fundraiser will be held online on Zoom and will be filled with music and poetry performances from renowned artists. If children aged 15-18 years and youth aged 19-30 years are added to these statistics, the numbers are even higher. Many of these children and youth live in rural parts of Uganda. Additionally, many of these children and youth are orphans as a result of their parents succumbing to this virus. As a result, these children are left under the care of their grandparents who are elderly and hence vulnerable themselves. The high HIV prevalence, low education, unequal gender norms, power relations between adults and children, and the stresses of living in chronic poverty shape the conditions for many highly vulnerable children and families living with HIV/AIDS. Resultantly, these children lack access to proper nutrition which is very critical for the Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) that they need to take, thus making adherence and HIV suppression very difficult. The Covid-19 pandemic has only worked to worsen the conditions of life of such individuals and households. Apart from HIV, these youth and children experience mental health problems such as self-blame, stigma, and others.With 50 CAD, we are able to provide a child or youth living with HIV in Uganda the gift of a female goat. Each goat can give birth twice a year (if not, once a year at least). This means that a family that received a female goat last year now has two or three goats. This is 100% and 200% increase in what they were gifted last year. The number of goats will continue to multiply, and these families can use the goat milk to enrich the nutrition of these children, sell the goats to pay school fees and other basic needs. Goats were chosen because of their resilience to extreme weather and diseases and parasites hence affordability of care from the beneficiaries’ perspective. A research was conducted where the children and youth and their families were consulted about the best way to uplift their household income and goat farming was unanimously selected.During the pilot project in 2020/2021, we successfully supported 63 children and youth with a female goat each. The goal for this year is to support 200 children and youth with a female goat each. Before receiving the goats, beneficiaries received training to ensure that they committed to rearing the goats received, and understood some basic best practices in goat farming.In the future, we hope to support other children and youth and families living with HIV in other countries in Africa and the world.All proceeds from this event will be used for purchasing goats for children and youth living with HIV. Your gift of a goat will bring a smile to their faces, enrich their family incomes, and contribute to education opportunities in the future.Key PartnersThe Spinoza Foundation is a Non-profit organization operating in Uganda which is passionate about the capability and strength of Ugandan (African) communities. Through a multi-dimensional approach, the Spinoza Foundation believes that human, social, political, and economic development is feasible. So far, the Spinoza Foundation has organized leadership training workshops for student leaders in more than 8 primary and secondary schools in Uganda. With respect to the pilot project, The Spinoza Foundation conducted field research, made recommendations, sourced supplementary funding from private individuals, purchased the goats, and distributed them to the project beneficiaries. Enactus UBCO is a chapter of Enactus Canada. Enactus believes in students taking on social entrepreneurship action as a vehicle for creating a better world for us all. For the pilot project, Enactus UBCO was the main funding body. Enactus UBCO provided CAD 2100 (equivalent of 5,972,653 UGX).
