Artist Talk at the Innovation Studio + Store: Zhenya Parish

Previously known as the Arlington Arts Center, the Museum of Contemporary Art Arlington is an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that enriches community life by connecting the public with contemporary art and artists through exhibitions, education programs, and an artists-in-residence program. Located at 3550 Wilson Blvd, Arlington, VA, the museum is open Wed.-Sun. 12-5pm. The museum has free on-site parking, is easy to reach by metro and bus, and is accessible. <h3>About the Artist</h3><a href="https://zhenyastudio.com/" title="https://zhenyastudio.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Zhenya Parish</a> developed her love, desire and persistence for art in Russia, where she was born. Starting as a teenager, she attended art school in Voronezh and was trained in classical Post-Soviet art education. The unfortunate death of her mother led her to the United States, and Kansas State University, where she pursued a Fine Arts, Oil Painting degree.Parish's paintings began as raw and dark with windows of light, simplified in shapes and colors to reflect her childhood. In moving to DC, Parish began a new life, eventually, becoming a mother. There, she also began expanding her toolbox, challenging canvases and colors to surpass their utilitarian limitations. She began to explore live and interactive art creations, upon which, “Canvas Vibrations” was born. In recent years, Parish has been working out of a new studio space and leveraging that into new and refined explorations.

To gain access to emotional dynamics, I explore relationships between shapes and colors. I believe that the beauty of the abstract form encourages and invites the observer to participate in dialogue. From these exchanges, understanding is not fixed, but variable, opening up possibilities.I focus on rounder organic forms and objects that float on the canvas using a layering process. I avoid straight and hard lines to open up the forms to greater interpretation, resulting in a less rigid definition to foster the exploration of multiple dimensions.With the abstract form, I am able to express and excite a visceral response that creates a dialogue between shape, form, and reality–a pictorial language that differs from commonly held expressions. Through this discourse, I encourage an exploration of dialogue that questions perception and understanding, inviting the viewer to write their own story."
