Join Mike Whalen, from the MA Dept. of Conservation &amp; Recreation (DCR), and Peter Dudek from Bascom Lodge, atop the most scenic, highest elevation (3,491′) and oldest wilderness state park in Massachusetts. Discover the 1930’s period of great park building when government work programs like the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), created special places for recreation. The rustic, yet elegant, “parkitecture” of Bascom Lodge became a distinctive style that defined America’s parks. This is an interpretive walk around the summit of Mount Greylock, with an emphasis on its unique ecology and historic structures as they comprise a fully realized historic landscape; and take an insider’s tour of Bascom Lodge.At 3,491 feet above sea level, the summit of Mt. Greylock rises well into the boreal climate zone, offering a glimpse of an ecosystem typically found several hundred miles to the north of the Berkshires. The summit offers breathtaking panoramic views of 4 states in the region. We will meet at the Mt. Greylock visitors center in Lanesboro and then have several people carpool us up to the summit as parking is limited up top on busy days.PRE-WALK LUNCH: Please join us at Bascom Lodge at 12pm for a pre-walk lunch. Greylock Summit from your home before you leave for the walk, so that you will be able bring the right clothes to deal with any last minute changes in the weather. Weather in the Berkshires can change quickly and it always good to be prepared for rain, wind, &amp; unexpectedly cooler or hotter temps than were forecast the day before.
