The Nicholson Projectis apaidartist residency program coupled with a neighborhood garden that works to support artists and serves as a creative and innovative cultural hub. Our vision is to inspire others to use non-traditionalarts and community-centered projectsas a pathway toward stronger, more vibrant communities.We seek to serve asa community anchor that celebrates the community’s authentic identity while infusing new vibrancy into Southeast DC. Ultimately, we will harness the power of creative placemaking to strengthen the existing social fabric of the area.

Join The Nicholson Project at The Fillmore School Studios for the reception of <a href="https://www.thenicholsonproject.org/queer-altars" title="https://www.thenicholsonproject.org/queer-altars" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Queer Altars</a> by artist Stephanie Mercedes.Queer Altars hopes to challenge historical visual power structures, suggesting a reimagining of sacred space, to include those of us who were excluded. Through melted weapons, 3D prints, and relief castings, Queer Altars poses the questions: How can we move away from martyrdom? How can we honor those who passed and still celebrate those of us who remain?Queer Altars seeks to create meaningful space for remembrance, healing, and agency for DC's LGBTQIA+ community in response to gun violence and its reverberating impact. This project is supported by Mayor Bowser and the Mayor's Office of LGBTQ Affairs Community Grant. Thank you to S&amp;R Evermay Foundation for hosting.

About Stephanie MercedesMercedes is an uncategorized Queer Latinx artist who choreographs large scale performances and installations based in sound. Mercedes transforms weapons into musical installations and works of art. She also excavates missing violent histories. Mercedes has exhibited and performed at the Bronx Museum, the Queens Museum, the Smithsonian, the Kennedy Center and the National Gallery of Art. She has been funded by George Soro's Open Society Foundation, Light Works, NALAC, The Foundation for Contemporary Art, Washington Project for the Arts, The DC Commission for the Arts and Humanities, the GLB Memorial Foundation, the Warhol Foundation, and the Clarvit Fellowship. Mercedes has been an artist-in-residence at: VisArts, Halcyon Art Labs, the Bronx Museum, Montgomery College, Christopher Newport University, SOMA, Lugar a Dudas, Largo das Artes and La Ira de Dios. Mercedes is producing an Opera with CulturalDC in 2022-23.
