Josh is a psychotherapist and also serves as the director of the Sexuality, Attachment and Trauma Network and an associate therapist of the Sexuality, Attachment and Trauma Project.Josh is an advanced candidate in adult psychoanalysis at the Psychoanalytic Training Institute of the Contemporary Freudian Society.

This is a 2-hour continuing education presentation on unexpected terminations in psychotherapy and psychoanalysis.

Julia Chislenko, LCSW, PhD is a psychotherapist in private practice in NYC where she provides psychotherapy and psychoanalysis for adults and couples. She specializes in young adulthood, life transitions, and career and relationship issues. Dr. Chislenko is an advanced candidate at the Psychoanalytic Training Institute of the Contemporary Freudian Society. She combines her psychoanalytic training and clinical expertise with her prior experience in academia and on Wall Street.

Unexpected Terminations: The Therapist&#x27;s Blind SpotsYou are happy with the way the treatment is going, proud of the good work you are doing with a patient. You are shocked when the patient tells you she wants to terminate and today is the last session. You see a couple for a consultation and feel you connected well and set the patients up for a long-term treatment - and you never hear from them again. You are coming back from vacation, looking forward to returning to deep work you thought was going well. In your first session back, a patient tells you he has decided to slow down and reduce the number of sessions going forward. Every therapist has similar stories to tell. At this workshop we will discuss common causes for such unexpected terminations and consider clinical examples illustrating ways of handling patients’ ambivalence, hidden anxiety, and negative feelings about the treatment or the therapist.Learning methods:<ol><li>Consider clinical examples of unexpected patient terminations</li><li>Explore the concepts of ambivalence, resistance, and negative transference</li><li>Discuss various ways of handling these situations clinically</li></ol>Learning objectives:After this workshop, participants will be able to:<ol><li>Recognize potential causes for patient terminations</li><li>Apply the concepts of ambivalence, resistance, and negative transference in their clinical work</li><li>Facilitate patients’ consistent attendance and commitment to treatment</li></ol>Who Should Attend: Mental Health Professionals (psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, licensed professional counselors, e.g. LPs, LCATs, and pastoral counselors) and those with an interest in psychodynamic and psychoanalytic thinking and clinical applications. Continuing Education Credits: LMSWs/LCSWs: Union Square Psychotherapy, LCSW, PLLC is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #SW-0598. CE credits are granted to participants with documented attendance of the entire program and completed evaluation form. No partial credits will be offered. It is the responsibility of the participants seeking CE credits to comply with these requirements.
