A  group of local artists from El Paso will print live a 30-foot-long print!

This year, La Frontera Print Fest will unite 10 artists from El Paso [Skuishi, Bear Ramos, Brian Holt, Lorena Hernandez, Payton Szwaczkowski, Diane Vera-Ureño, Isaac Varela] and Ciudad Juárez [David Sanchez, Luis Roacho, Zurisaday Duran Rodriguez] to create an unforgettable panoramic print of Sister Cities.Experience a unique cultural event with live printmaking! Witness the creation of a 30-foot-long panoramic print with ten panels, using relief linocut printing, featuring the beauty of the borderland region, using important areas, icons, and landscapes. During the live printmaking performance, immerse yourself in an art vendor market and discover the talent of many artists around the region.This project aims to promote printmaking within the community and create a welcoming environment for various artists across the borderland.This is a free event!

Luckily for Jack Daw, his audience is Fort Worth. In the words purportedly said by local content creator Josie Villa-Singleton, “If you don’t have a Jack Daw piece in your house, are you even from Fort Worth?”Working in linocut (a printmaking technique that involves carving designs in relief on a block of linoleum), Jack’s subject matter ranges from classic Texan fare (TCU, Big Tex, Willie Nelson) to popular culture (Star Wars, David Bowie, Pokemon). Weaved in with every piece is a hefty dose of humor — usually a combination of two subjects so disparate one can’t help but chuckle at the juxtaposition. Whether it’s John Wayne wielding a lightsaber, Hank Hill riding a propane can in the style of Slim Pickens in Dr. Strangelove, or Jesus clad in a Whataburger hat turning bread into burgers and fries, Jack revels in depicting inside jokes for Fort Worthians and pop culture lovers alike. The process of finding ideas is fairly organic. Jack says, “I’m all over the place with my own interests, so I have something for everyone.” Following through with what held his interest also led him to finding his medium and eventually his audience, after receiving an associate degree at TCC, where he fell in love with printmaking. Instead of continuing the typical art journey, he used his financial aid check, one meant for attending classes at UT Arlington, to buy a stand-up bass and joined the Fort Worth “American ‘Gothic’ country band,” Whiskey Folk Ramblers. Susan Ely GonzalezSusan Ely Gonzalez, "Skuishi" graduated from The University of Texas at El Paso with a Bachelor's in Art with a Double concentration in Printmaking and Graphic Design and a Minor in Museum Art Studies. Her career is primarily focused on printmaking. She has been in the art culture for over ten years. Skuishi's works have been inspired differently throughout the years. She mainly enjoys creating series about Mexican holidays, traditional Mexican Folkloric dances, personal experiences, dreams, and observations. Her works have been in many shows locally, nationally, and internationally. "Skuishi Press is my printmaking studio at home where I can continue creating my works of art and inspire others to follow their dreams, create art, represent the borderland community, represent their culture, and, most importantly, a way to express themselves."

Lorena HernandezLorena Hernandez is a printmaker and longtime traditional artist. After growing up in Mile High City, Denver, Colorado, she expresses her urban inspiration through bold colors and dynamic shapes. Lorena’s work has been featured at the Denver Art Museum’s “Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and Mexican Modernism” exhibition, showcasing her self-portrait in “Illustrating Idioms.”

Diane Vera-UreñoDiane Vera-Ureño received both her Bachelor’s and Master’s in Art Education with an emphasis in Printmaking at the University of Texas at El Paso. Upon finishing her bachelor’s, she worked at the El Paso Museum of Art, which sparked her 14-year career teaching high school art while balancing her art pursuits. As an art teacher Diane has mentored her students through many accolades including guiding her students to be awarded Gold Keys at the New Mexico Scholastic Art Awards and Gold Seals at the Texas Visual Arts Scholastic Event. Diane enjoys creating her work through investigation and she has discovered a pull to community and social artwork. She vacillates between pure mark-making and the discovery of stories. The questions she aims to discover through her work are: how does one become who they are, and how do you tell their story through mark-making? She seeks to answer these questions in her work through printmaking, painting, and ceramics. Her portfolio focus has been primarily printmaking but has grown from mural painting to ceramics. Diane’s artwork has been supported through various programs such as the Artist’s Incubator Program, funded by the MCAD, the Cald Collective, the Green Hope Project and more. Diane has also received many awards and honorable mentions throughout her artistic career. She currently resides in the Low Res MFA program at MassArt in Boston.

Brian Anthony HoltBrian Anthony Holt was born and raised in the small town of Galion, Ohio, and began exploring art as far back as he can remember. He attended the Art Institute of Pittsburgh before joining the Army in 2005. After leaving the service in 2016 he attended El Paso Community College and began taking art courses. He later transferred to The University of Texas at El Paso where he is pursuing a degree in art education. His work varies from drawing, ceramics, sculpture, painting, and printmaking. Holt’s works have been shared at The Las Cruces Museum of Art, The Rubin Center, and various spaces throughout El Paso. He has carried out artist residencies at Casa Ortiz and Toma Gallery and Studios where he curated monthly exhibitions with local artists. His inspiration comes from his travels, storytelling, and sharing mental and emotional states to connect with his viewers. "Often say in another life I was a printmaker. I really enjoy all the various printmaking methods, the steps it takes it takes to create a print, the smell of ink rolling, and the community that comes with printmakers. I have also been fortunate enough to work alongside my mentor Manny Guerra in his shop at Horned Toad Prints. It's great to have a support system in the art community that believes in your work and pushes you to continue to create."

Bernadette RamosBernadette ‘Bear’ Ramos works at the El Paso Museum of Art as the Museum Registrar. Her role consists of tasks that support exhibitions and collection care of over 7,000 objects. Bear is also a local artist who works in printmaking, aerosol, and multimedia. “My inspiration for my art is driven by my culture, family, and memories.”

Payton SzwaczkowskiPayton is a student at the University of Texas at El Paso, where she focuses on art history and printmaking. This year, she carried out a full residency in Rome, Italy. Payton currently works at White Sands National Park, balancing her love for nature, history, and art.

Isaac Varela was born in 1985 in El Paso, Texas. Much of his artistic influence growing up came from comic books, video games, 80s movies, and pro wrestling, all of which still have a huge influence on him. He is currently attending the University of Texas at El Paso for his BFA in Printmaking with minors in Painting and Museum Studies. In his personal time, he has been working on his own comics that he hopes to have published within the next two years.

Soy estudiante de diseño gráfico, artista independiente con más de seis años de experiencia, manejo diversas técnicas de pintura tradicional y digital, los últimos cuatro años he incursionado en el mundo del tatuaje siendo este último la base de mi trabajo actual[1]mente Una de mis metas como artista es llevar mis mensajes a más per[1]sonas, acercar el arte a las comunidades en general, sobre todo aquellas zonas y personas en situación de vulnerabilidad, crear consciencia sobre distintas problematicas sociales, así como llevar al receptor a la introspección y al análisis de su entorno y su realidad.

Luis Roacho Aguilera es un artista visual nacido en Ciudad Juárez Chihuahua (1988) vive y trabaja en dicha ciudad, en el año 2016 obtuvo el grado de licenciado en artes visuales por la universidad autónoma de cuidad Juárez.  Centra principalmente su trabajo artístico en la pintura, interesado en temáticas relacionadas a la condición fronteriza y la expresión de vivir en esta ciudad, entre las que se pueden mencionar la violencia, la memoria y la vulnerabilidad. El trabajo de este pintor explora la iconografía de la violencia en la ciudad mostrando como algunos objetos cotidianos y paisajes están cargados de recuerdos de crímenes o sucesos trágicos creando también relatos que dan cuenta la de la fragilidad humana que se desenvuelve en los márgenes de la ciudad. Ha tenido la oportunidad de participar en varias exposiciones colectivas dentro y fuera de Juárez, en el año 2019 tuvo su primera exposición individual en el Museo de Arte de Ciudad Juárez, en 2020 participó en las exposición This is América en la ciudad de Amersfoot, Países Bajos y en el 2021 le fue comisionado un mural acerca de la historia de la de Guadalupe Distrito Bravo en una superficie de 70 metros cuadrados dentro de la presencia de este municipio, entre otras exposiciones.

David Antonio Sánchez Carrillo, es un artista visual egresado de University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) con una licenciatura de Bellas Artes con enfoque en las ramas de la pintura y el grabado.Dentro del trayecto de su práctica, David utiliza principalmente pintura acrílica aunque procura mantener un interés en la experimentación continua con otras técnicas distintas de pintura, como el gouache o los pasteles al óleo. También le gusta explorar la carpintería y nuevos materiales no tan tradicionales con el fin de poder enriquecer el conocimiento y su arsenal de posibilidades para la creación de nuevas obras. Su obra juega con la idea de la tranquilidad y las situaciones inocuas bajo diferentes atmósferas. Sus piezas pueden traer sentimientos de tranquilidad y paz, melancolía, desconcierto, alegría o tensión. Actualmente trabaja para una empresa comercial pintando murales, cuadros, entre otros proyectos.
