Jazz historian David Sager sheds light on Buddy Bolden's sound and style, via vintage and contemporary sound recordings and other artifacts.

It is nearly impossible to speak of jazz pioneer Buddy Bolden without invoking, or evoking, myth and exaggeration. The reasons are obvious enough; Bolden, an African-American cornetist in early twentieth century New Orleans, played a passionate, embryonic version of what would become known as jazz. He is generally considered to be the man who first combined instrumental dance music with blues and ragtime melodies. His contemporaries recalled that he played in a loud, rough manner and could be heard miles away. From all accounts, Bolden's music was powerful, stirring, and magical. Moreover, the fact that there are no extant recordings of Bolden magnifies the myth and causes us to wonder. Join jazz historian David Sager, as he sheds light on Buddy Bolden's sound and style, via vintage and contemporary sound recordings and other artifacts. David Sager is a trombonist , Grammy nominated writer, and Reference Assistant in the Library of Congress's Recorded Sound Research Center. He also holds a master's degree in Jazz History &amp; Research from Rutgers University.Register before 5:00p.m. the day of the presentation to receive the Zoom link.
