Magazines are rich typographic environments with intricate hierarchies and endless micro-typography.

This class will be held online. A Zoom link will be sent to all enrolled a few days before the event.Magazines are rich typographic environments with intricate hierarchies and endless micro-typography. It sounds and feels great until copy won&#x27;t stop changing and teams become minimal. MagFlow is a six-hour workshop that will give you the techniques and strategies to tackle challenging editorial scenarios straightaway. We will use a combination of Character, Paragraph, Nested, Grep and Object Styles to produce resilient templates regardless of the complexity of your typographic decisions or the size of your team.We will start off by learning how to chain styles and apply them sequentially, both to format boxes with a single click and to format specific hierarchies. Next, we will learn how to build rules to implement micro-typography automatically. This will involve an introduction to Grep Styles with practical examples that you can apply to your projects right after the workshop.With all this knowledge in hand, we will format a four-page article, with all hierarchical elements and micro-typography in a couple of minutes. The resulting template is naturally ready for InCopy integration if this is your case. Flexibility is the keyword of this workflow as the solutions built for the article could be used in other parts of the magazine.This workflow is based in Word and InDesign, so you need to bring your own laptop with both installed. Latest versions are preferred, but Word 2010+ and InDesign CS6+ will work just fine. Mac and PC friendly.Gustavo Soares works as a type, typography and information design specialist. His background in magazine design set out his interest in type and information architecture, both pursued further with two masters degrees: MA Information Design awarded by the University of Reading, UK; and MA Type and Media, awarded by the Royal Academy of Arts (KABK), NL.In those years Gustavo learned to constantly reflect on practice, model what works and define effective workflows. His expertise found fertile grounds in extensive temporary and permanent wayfinding. Gustavo has worked as design lead or external consultant for projects like FIFA 2014 World Cup, Rio 2016 Olympic Games, Walk Rio and International Airports and Hospitals in Brazil.By having designed and published retail and custom fonts, he has an in-depth understanding of how type works. His productivity workflows always explore and take into consideration refined hierarchies and micro-typography.Gustavo has been Member of the Jury for two editions of the Bienal Tipo Latinos (2014, 2016) and hundreds of designers have attended his workshops in Brazil, Mexico and Chile. Currently, Gustavo is the Wayfinding Lead for Lima 2019 Pan-American Games.
