Growing in Cultural Humility – From Theory to Practice

The Faith Community Health Network (FCHN) is a non-supervisory professional association that supports a growing group of dedicated Faith Community Nurses (FCNs) (formerly called Parish Nurses) and health ministers from diverse faiths serving in their own faith communities in the context of their faith tradition - or in the community-at-large - bringing inclusive healthcare access to vulnerable and diverse populations in a non-traditional setting. Faith community members have unique needs, especially spiritual care needs. Trusted FCNs and health ministers serving within their faith tradition can assess the population to develop interventions to meet those unique needs. It is important that nurses can function ethically and effectively in intercultural settings. Nurses need the skills to interact, communicate, build relationships, and work effectively with people from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds.Please join us as we explore cultural humility and the importance of providing culturally and linguistically appropriate care to every client no matter their age, socioeconomic status, race, gender, ability, sexual orientation, and/or religion. At the end of this session, attendees should be able to:1. Discuss the impacts of implicit bias on health care.2. Describe cultural competency and cultural humility and the role it plays in your nursing practice.3. Identify ways to advance health equity, improve quality of care, and help eliminate health care disparities.***** This activity has been submitted to the Nursing Division of the Spiritual Care Association for approval to award contact hours.
