Join us for this in-person training on Tuesday, September 24, 2024 from 8:30am-4:30pm ET at 140 The Fenway, Room 378.This training is hosted by ADVANCE Office of Faculty Development and led by facilitators from the Center for Improvment of Mentored Experiences in Research (CIMER).Research shows that culturally diverse teams outperform and out-innovate culturally homogenous teams, and lead to better science. But addressing cultural diversity can be daunting. Designed for mentors who have already taken basic mentor training, this awareness-raising workshop helps mentors identify their personal assumptions, biases, and privileges that may operate in their mentoring relationships. Through group discussion, case scenarios, and role play, mentors have the opportunity to learn and practice culturally aware mentoring skills with their peers. Developed through NIH support, this workshop focuses on the racial and ethnic diversity within the United States (including activities that deal with systematic oppression and racialized violence) and in the biomedical sciences. One can easily extrapolate core concepts to other aspects of cultural identity and other audiences.Learning Objectives:During this workshop, mentors will learn how to:<ol><li>Identify how your cultural beliefs, worldviews, and identities influence your mentoring practices</li><li>Recognize how cultural diversity can impact, complicate, and benefit your research mentoring relationships</li><li>Acknowledge the impact of conscious and unconscious assumptions, privilege, stereotype threat, and biases on the mentor-mentee relationship</li><li>Apply evidence-based strategies using case studies to reduce and counteract the impact of biases, stereotype threat, and privilege to foster trusting, culturally responsive mentoring relationships</li></ol>Participant Qualifications:<ul><li>Be a faculty member, instructor, or administrator currently mentoring graduate students, post-docs or junior faculty.</li><li>Previous experience with research mentor training. This could include 4+ hours of any CIMER mentor training (e.g., Entering Mentoring) or you can take the self-paced online <a href="https://www.ctsi.umn.edu/education-and-training/mentoring/mentor-training" title="https://www.ctsi.umn.edu/education-and-training/mentoring/mentor-training" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Optimizing the Practice of Mentoring</a> (there is no charge for the latter, though registration is required).</li><li>Willingness to complete pre-session work, including: ~1-hour online module and preparing culture box items (two objects that represent important parts of your life story and social identities).</li></ul>Breakfast, lunch, and a light snack will be provided.This event is capped at 25 participants.
