Baltimore Clayworks Virtual Artist Talk with Maman Rikin

Baltimore Clayworks was founded by nine artists in 1980 as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. It is known for its attentiveness to its neighborhood, and possesses a national and international reputation for artistic excellence, artists’ support, and community involvement. Clayworks provides affordable studio space, equipment, and professional opportunities; offers hands-on studio classes for children and adults; and presents exhibitions curated or juried by professional artists in the field. It has also developed programs with artists and community organizations that bring art experiences into the lives of at-risk children and marginalized adults; and is the only arts organization in Baltimore that operates stand-alone community based satellite studios to reach children and adults in inner city communities.

Ceramic artists are at the heart of Baltimore Clayworks. Artists are at the center of the mission of Baltimore Clayworks, and provide the organization with talent and innovation to inspire our community and to enliven the artistic impact of ceramics in our region. Their professional and personal networks provide a kaleidoscope of interactions with peers, galleries, and academic institutions, which keep the organization at the forefront of contemporary ceramic art.Artist BioSupratman (Maman) Rakin was born in Bandung. He was first trained as a portrait artist under the encouragement of his father, a school teacher. But soon, he found himself mostly creating ceramic sculptures and utilitarian ceramic pieces. He holds Masters of Fine Art degrees from Southern Illinois University and Pittsburg State University.He is currently an Associate Professor in ceramics at the Catonsville Community College, Baltimore. He works tirelessly with students and schools in Baltimore, and the US, in art expression through ceramics. His works have been featured in extensive publications in Indonesia, USA, and South Korea. In 1999, he was commissioned by Baltimore City government to create a 130ft sculptural promenade at Druid Hill Park, Baltimore.
