Fats Domino was a New Orleans music legend whose strong jazz ties make him a favorite in a number of musical genres. Join us to learn more!

Fats Domino has strong jazz ties through his jazz-influenced recordings, his performances (he ended shows with “The Saints” and his musicians second lining), and his musicians, most of whom played jazz, trad &amp; modern. Dave Bartholomew and Harrison Verrett (Fats’ brother-in-law who taught him music) played with Papa Celestin, etc., with Dave later playing Preservation Hall.Our speaker, Rick Coleman, has written about New Orleans music and rock ‘n’ roll for over 40 years after his first interview with Bo Diddley. He won a national award for liner notes on the Little Richard Specialty Box Set and won the ASCAP award for best music biography for BLUE MONDAY: FATS DOMINO AND THE LOST DAWN OF ROCK ‘N’ ROLL. Rick co-produced the American Masters documentary on Fats Domino THE BIG BEAT, which premiered on PBS on his birthday in 2016, the year before he died. For the last decade or so he has been completing a book on the history of New Orleans music from its founding.Rick highly recommends the viewing of Fats Domino—The Big Beat and the Birth of Rock ‘n’ Roll, which is on YouTube, Tubi, Amazon Prime, etc. This is the 90 minute version of the 2016 PBS American Masters. Rick's book can be found cheaply on eBay and other re-seller outlets.We offer FREE tickets for our Jazz Talks, but always appreciate anyone who can chip in for donation tickets to help offset the cost of the program.
