We'll be hosting a conversation among multiple local contributors to the new anthology <a href="https://bookshop.org/a/98349/9781953368706" title="https://bookshop.org/a/98349/9781953368706" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Best of the Rust Belt</a>, which collects ten years of the best personal essays from a contested region that some call the "real America" and others think of as fading or forgotten. We'll have with us some of the most active thinkers and thoughtful activists in town, so it's sure to be a provocative discussion you won't want to miss. Listen in, ask questions, buy a signed book, and raise a glass with us!(Admission is free, but registering here will help us plan for the right number of attendees.)--------------------------------------------- Michael Allen is an academic researcher, historian, teacher, critic, and heritage conservationist, focusing his work on on interdisciplinary investigation of architecture, history, landscape, preservation, political power, urban space, and the racial histories of US cities. He is the executive director of the National Building Arts Center, and as of August of 2024, will be a Visiting Assistant Professor of History at West Virginia University. As such, this will be one of his final public appearances as a St. Louis resident.Vivian Gibson grew up in Mill Creek Valley, a segregated working-class neighborhood in St. Louis that was razed in 1959 to build a highway, an act of racism disguised under urban renewal as "progress." She is the author of The Last Children of Mill Creek, a memoir from Belt Publishing that has been hailed by critics as "a spare, elegant jewel of a work." She honored by the Missouri Humanities Council with their Literary Achievement Award in 2020 and was named Missouri Author of the Year in 2022 by the Missouri Library Association.Nartana Premachandra is Story Editor of the NY-based international journal Parabola, and President of Dances of India in St. Louis, one of the oldest classical Indian dance companies in the US, now in its 47th season.Leviathan Bookstore, the small shop with the big name, is St. Louis's newest independent bookseller. Founded by James Crossley, an industry veteran from the Pacific Northwest and recent transplant to St. Louis, it opened in the spring of 2024 as a pop-up operation inside of Dunaway Books on South Grand near Tower Grove Park and will be moving into a permanent home of its own in the fall of 2024.
