Overview

The LLVM Foundation is hosting a Diversity and Inclusion Workshop the day before the 2020 European LLVM Developers’ Meeting. The workshop will be held at the Marriott Rive Gauche on April 5th and includes a cocktail reception.

This event features speakers and discussion aiming to increase diversity and inclusion within the LLVM community, attendee's workplace or university, and within the field of compilers and tools.  It is open to anyone who is interested in these efforts.

Attendance is limited to 100 attendees and tickets will be priced at $50 (students $25).

Our featured speaker at the Diversity & Inclusion Workshop is Adelina Chalmers and she will be giving a talk entitled - "Don’t Let Fear of Feedback Stop your Contributions: How to Respond to Negative Feedback"

Abstract:

Many people in the LLVM community do not participate in threads on the mailing list, RFCs (requests for comment), reviews or patches.

How do we ensure everyone’s voice is heard when not everyone feels able to participate due to fear of negative feedback?

Don’t Let Fear of Feedback Stop your Contributions: How to Respond to Negative Feedback

Do you feel depressedfrozen or argumentative when receiving negative or constructive feedback, especially in writing?

Perhaps you find your mind spirals out of controlworrying about the critique you received?

Would you like to discover how you can stop these negative feelings or what is the best thing to do or say in response?

Whether you are avoiding participating to threads on the mailing list, or responding to RFCs, or speaking at LLVM meetings due to fear of negative feedback, or want to learn new tricks about receiving (and giving!) feedback, this session will have something valuable for you.

When you come to this session you will:

  • Find out what is the best way to respond to negative feedback
  • Discover how your brain reacts to negative feedback and how you can change this reaction
  • Test out a different kind of response to negative feedback and see how it feels to you.

About Adelina:

Adelina decodes soft skills into easy to understand concepts. One of Adelina's key skills is that she co-designs her workshops with the people in the audience and a white boardShe's known as "The Geek Whisperer" because people who observed Adelina working with engineers said: "I have never seen anyone connect with engineers like this. It's like you are a geek whisperer."  She loved the name, but did not take it on until 5 years later, after she spoke to countless engineers and scientists and asked if they felt patronised by this name. The majority (93%) said they liked the name and found it quirky, so she decided to take it on.

Adelina worked in human rights for 9 years, until she realised in 2011 that the tech sector has a bigger impact on humans' quality of life than government. In 2019 she won the Cofinitive Top 7#People to Watch Award
She also works with Microsoft, Amazon and one of Arm’s original founders on an annual event where Cambridge tech start-up founders present a business problem and the panel (made of founders/executives from Arm, Amazon and Microsoft) give advice on how they would solve it. Other people on Adelina’s panel included: former MD at Yahoo! Europe, former CTO at HP, Director of Engineering at Amazon, former Chief Digital Officer at UBS and many Arm executives.
