How Much is Enough?

The Govanhill International Festival and Carnival (GIFC) is back once again and this year we’re arriving bigger and bolder than ever before. Now in our sixth year, we’re thrilled to bring you a programme of more than fifty events fusing together art, heritage and community activism. This two-week long showcase of music, talks, walks, film, art exhibitions and workshops is a testament to the amazing cultural, ethnic and religious diversity that exists right here in Govanhill. We’re also delighted to be able to say that the Govanhill Parade and Carnival will be making a colourful return to the festival after last year’s biggest turnout to date!While the festival might have grown in scale and size over the years, at its heart, GIFC will always be an anti-racist festival. Every year, we continue to celebrate the contributions that immigrants have made to Govanhill, showing that there is no room for racism in our community. Govanhill really is a neighbourhood unlike any other in Scotland; home to people of 40+ nationalities and 60+ languages. The richness of our flourishing arts and culture scene shows that our diversity, history and heritage is what makes Govanhill so unique and why we feel so proud to live here and call this community ours!So, what’s stopping you? Kate O’ Shea will lead a talk about her practice working across printmaking, archiving, large-scale installation, performance, and publishing.Céist Na Talún (The Land Question) is central to the international networks of solidarity that Kate threads together with others. Recently Kate has been collaborating with people in Govanhill, Glasgow and the Isle of Eigg in northwest Scotland. Govanhill and the Isle of Eigg are two very different locations united by their high-profile community activism in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Kate worked with community leaders from both the Isle of Eigg Buy-Out and the occupation of Govanhill Baths, along with the archives of both timelines to produce a series of work entitled 'Revolutionary Archivists'.In 2023, <a href="https://halfletterpress.com/how-much-is-enough/" title="https://halfletterpress.com/how-much-is-enough/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">How Much Is Enough? Kate O' Shea &amp; The Just City Residency (halfletterpress.com)</a> was published by Half Letter Press, Chicago, Common Ground Dublin 8 and Create.She co-founded the transdisciplinary collective, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/broken_fields/" title="https://www.instagram.com/broken_fields/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Broken Fields</a>, bringing together experience, knowledge, and practice from the fields of socially engaged art, architecture, community work, social movement archiving, activism, research, and writing. A Broken Field’s proposal for a new community space at the Irish Museum of Modern Art was exhibited in 2023. In 2021 she was awarded the Artist in the Community Scheme Bursary Award in Collaborative Arts &amp; Community Development from Create, the natonal development agency for collaborative arts. She also co-organised <a href="https://www.create-ireland.ie/publication/networks-of-solidarity-01-between-our-minds/" title="https://www.create-ireland.ie/publication/networks-of-solidarity-01-between-our-minds/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Networks of Solidarity</a> with Enya Moore.Kate is co-founder with Victoria Brunetta of independent publishing house Durty Books with a forthcoming publication titled<a href="https://www.theartistledarchive.com/" title="https://www.theartistledarchive.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"> The Artist-led Archive – Sustainable Activism and the Embrace of Flux</a> with Megs Morley. In 2015, she co-founded The People’s Kitchen and is a member of Red Wheelbarrow Productions.
