The Govanhill International Festival and Carnival (GIFC) is back once again and this year we’re arriving bigger and bolder than ever before. Now in our sixth year, we’re thrilled to bring you a programme of more than fifty events fusing together art, heritage and community activism. This two-week long showcase of music, talks, walks, film, art exhibitions and workshops is a testament to the amazing cultural, ethnic and religious diversity that exists right here in Govanhill. We’re also delighted to be able to say that the Govanhill Parade and Carnival will be making a colourful return to the festival after last year’s biggest turnout to date!While the festival might have grown in scale and size over the years, at its heart, GIFC will always be an anti-racist festival. Every year, we continue to celebrate the contributions that immigrants have made to Govanhill, showing that there is no room for racism in our community. Govanhill really is a neighbourhood unlike any other in Scotland; home to people of 40+ nationalities and 60+ languages. The richness of our flourishing arts and culture scene shows that our diversity, history and heritage is what makes Govanhill so unique and why we feel so proud to live here and call this community ours!So, what’s stopping you? If Descartes separated our minds from our bodies, somewhere along the way our teeth became detached too, requiring their own specialist medical knowledge. With dental care in crises, Kirsty’s presentation gets to the root of the issue by extracting from her Masters research and exploring the political and economic history of dentistry. Offering a Marxist analysis, this discussion explores oral health inequalities, the creation of the dentist and how the profession shaped the NHS. Accessbility information TBC.
