Learn to ID Indiana's fall sparrows in a two parted virtual and in-person workshop at the Lye Creek Prairie Burn to practice your skills.

Join Indiana Audubon for a special two parted virtual and in-person workshop led by Jeremiah Oden, focusing on Indiana's sparrows. Whether you've been puzzled by the similarities between Song and Vesper Sparrows or intrigued by the challenge of finding Nelson's and LeConte's Sparrows, this workshop is your opportunity to deepen your birding knowledge. <h4>Part 1: Virtual Session (Friday, Oct. 11, 6:30-8 p.m. ET)</h4>Jeremiah, known for his extensive birding experience, brings a wealth of knowledge to this virtual part of the workshop. Having photographed every sparrow in the lower 48 states with only his smartphone, he's passionate about sharing insights for birders of all levels. From beginners to intermediates, we'll explore both common and uncommon species found in Indiana, providing tips that will enrich your birding adventures this fall and winter.<h4>Part 2: Field Birding (Saturday, Oct. 12, 8 a.m.–Noon ET)</h4>Workshop participants can opt for field birding on Saturday, October 12, at the Lye Creek Prairie Burn, an 88-acre wetland in north central Montgomery County that attracts a variety of sparrows. Apply your skills from the day before alongside Jeremiah, Shari McCollough (property owner, nature photographer, and IAS board member), and Libby Keyes (Mary Gray Bird Sanctuary operations manager and master bird bander).The field birding session is limited to 20 participants due to parking constraints. Participants will split into two groups: one for birding and searching for sparrows, and another for observing sparrows during a banding demonstration by Libby and Shari. Registered participants will meet Jeremiah, Shari, and Libby on site at 8 a.m. Eastern Time. The birding and banding will wrap up around lunchtime, with an optional continuation led by Jeremiah and Shari for interested participants afterward.
