In conjunction with the exhibition and in partnership with The Kranzberg Foundation and My Friends and I, join us for screenings of short films featured in the Considering St. Louis exhibition showcased alongside short films and music videos made by St. Louis based artists. My Friends and I will present the visual premiere of their latest project “American” with St. Louis based artist, Critical, followed by a Q&amp;A with My Friends and I co-founder Cami Thomas and Considering St. Louis curator, Ciera Alyse McKissick.Featured shorts and videos presented by: Cami Thomas, Catherine Dudley Rose, Carmen Ribaudo (scored by Lucy Dougherty), Dail Chambers, Damon Davis, Jess T. Dugan, Noel Spiva, Tasha Burton, Taylor Yacom, Stan Chisholm and Mike Roth, and Yvonne Osei. <blockquote>About Each Film:</blockquote><blockquote>Summer in St. Louis - Cami Thomas</blockquote><blockquote>1:32&nbsp;</blockquote><blockquote>Summer in St. Louis is a digital short directed by Cami Thomas, DPd by Papa Blankson and edited by Jazzy Kettenacker. </blockquote><blockquote>Coming off of the transformative years of 2020 and 2021, this digital piece uses St. Louis as the backdrop of a story of community, love, and impending revolution. </blockquote><blockquote>Letter to My Daughter - Jess T. Dugan&nbsp;</blockquote><blockquote>16:00</blockquote><blockquote>Letter to My Daughter is an autobiographical video directed to my five-year-old daughter, Elinor, that centers around my experience with parenthood throughout the first five years of her life. The audio soundtrack is my voice reading a letter to Elinor, and the images are from my personal archive and include snapshots, ultrasound images, and photographs from Family Pictures. The letter is highly personal and addresses a variety of topics, including my expectations around parenthood, the long and circuitous journey of trying to have a child with both known and anonymous sperm donors, the experiences of miscarriage and loss, and my adjustment to parenthood as a queer and nonbinary person. There are alphabet books that contain racist and offensive words and imagery that casually teach and perpetuate racial stereotypes and oppression.&nbsp;</blockquote><blockquote>In this exhibition, I purchased several alphabet books and photographed the pages. This was an emotionally taxing process. I wanted to break up the heaviness by culminating this project with a short film of the books being burned. This was a cathartic event that was necessary after 2 years of working on this project.</blockquote><blockquote> </blockquote><blockquote>The Boy in the Bottle - Damon Davis</blockquote><blockquote>5:39</blockquote><blockquote>The Boy in the Bottle is a short film that takes the form of a surrealist fairytale exploring expressions of the human condition in relation to generational curses, addiction, and self image. Through symbols, gestures, sound, and text, I interrogate how myths and moods of being are handed down from parent to child in a Black family, as well as how behaviors that are useful in certain settings can also be harmful in others. The film premiered in April 2023 in CITY PARK St. Louis as part of the opening reception for Counterpublic Triennial. It was written and directed by myself, with cinematography by Bradford Young, and is voiced by actor Cree Summer.&nbsp;</blockquote> <blockquote>PEACE MANTRA - Noel Spiva &amp; Vango Jones</blockquote><blockquote>5:00</blockquote><blockquote>Co-directed by Vango Jones and Noel Spiva, PEACE MANTRA is musical meditation for all the ways Vango Jones is welcoming peace into his life. The film was shot in Vango’s hometown in the county of Saint Louis, MO USA.</blockquote> <blockquote>Low Bottom Sounds - Carmen Ribaudo &amp; Lucy Dougherty</blockquote><blockquote>4:49</blockquote><blockquote>Low Bottom Sounds, was produced at Columbia Bottom Conservation Area, near the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. Using sand – a material found on the banks of the river – I worked on site to create a stop motion animation. This ephemeral and responsive way of working put me in conversation with the river, a body of water that is characterized by its extreme fluctuations. I used a field recorder to collect ambient sounds, which were then incorporated into a music score by Lucy Dougherty. Animating on-site put the piece in conversation with plein air painting, and also with the weather, where dappled light and windy grasses add layers of motion to the sequence.</blockquote> <blockquote>The Modal Jazzer - Kudda&nbsp;</blockquote><blockquote>5:18</blockquote><blockquote>A freestyle krump and hip-hop instrumental music video that interprets a moment in which a former musician encounters a young trumpet player to help him seek new inspiration.</blockquote> <blockquote>SMITTEN - Stan Chisholm (18andCounting) &amp; Mike Roth</blockquote><blockquote>4:28</blockquote><blockquote>A rap music video from 18andCounting, functionally acting as a trope of the genre that unfolds in an unwavering, chaotic rhythm.</blockquote> <blockquote>Africa Clothe Me Bare - Yvonne Osei </blockquote><blockquote>13:52</blockquote><blockquote>Africa Clothe Me Bare, St. Louis is part of an ongoing series of public performances (2015-Present) that redefines outdoor nude female sculptures in Western countries by dressing and undressing them. Typically found on buildings, architectural facades, fountains, and museum fronts, these sculptures are transformed using derivative and reinterpreted West African fabrics available in Western textile shops. This body of work addresses issues of global trade, colonialism, and gender inequality, while inverting power dynamics as a black female artist liberates white female sculptures predominantly created by Caucasian male artists in stone, bronze, and marble. By clothing and unclothing these ‘nude’ sculptures, they are reimagined as ‘naked,’ elevating them from mere objects of possession and desirability to subjects with heightened humanity.</blockquote> <blockquote>Broken Strings - Catherine Dudley Rose</blockquote><blockquote>12:00</blockquote><blockquote>In St. Louis the shared dreams (and nightmares) of a conductor father, his harpist daughter, a painter, and a poet, converge as they seek to heal trauma through the arts.&nbsp;</blockquote><blockquote>Captured on digital and 8mm film, this project utilized an all women and non-binary local crew in key positions on set and in post-production</blockquote><blockquote> </blockquote> About My Friends and IMy Friends and I is a St. Louis-based media production house that specializes in video and photo work that exemplifies and captures the essence of a rich, diverse, and authentic community. Based on the South Side of St. Louis Missouri and operating under the motto of "creation for creation’s sake" each visual production combines the creative perspectives of a rich, inspired, and diverse community of artists from the Midwest.
