“Reflections: How Does It Feel?” – Community Performance

Transforming 51 miles of the LA River/ Paayme Paxaayt with ART, NATURE and COMMUNITY.Each month we visit new sites along the River with artists, Indigenous Culture Bearers and local experts: Look for surprises around the bend!In 2023, our first year of River Sessions, we visited sites along the River in the spirit of Hyonaayn’ar -- a Tongva word that means both teacher and student. We listened to and learned creative tactics from many artists and indigenous cultural practitioners who work regeneratively with their communities and the River. What emerged is that the River is trying to heal herself --and our communities need healing too.Understanding and expressing emotions is a pathway to healing. Art can help us deepen our understanding of the emotional impact that the channelized River has upon us. Towards the goal of healing ourselves and the River, we will discover this year how art can connect us to our feelings. We will take time on our River Sessions for creative field research guied by poets, artists, and indigenous cultural practioners.

River Sessions

River Sessions are guided by Indigenous Culture Bearers, artists, creative ecologists, historians, and curators. Each session begins at a new  mile of Paayme Paxaayt (aka theLA River) offering a unique experience  following and learning from the River.

Join us for Reflections: How Does it Feel?, an intimate afternoon of poetry, storytelling, music and dance performances at the Billie Jean King Main Library in Long Beach, where we will explore our emotional connection to the River, nature and each other.Reflections is a community art performance featuring poetry, music, storytelling and dance inspired by the LA River, climate change and ecology. This program is presented as a part of the California Creative Corps project and in partnership with the Long Beach Public Library with directorial support from Ann Wellman of Long Beach Community Theater.We are calling it “Reflections” because our reflection is our connection. The LA River is both a metaphor and a literal indicator of our own health and self-awareness. What do you see when you look into the water? What do we find when we reflect upon our relationship with our environments, ourselves, and each other? We are excited to present pieces that explore the connections between the physical land and inner emotional landscapes. Featuring:Poetry by Nicelle Davis, Myrna Aguilar, Karo Ska, Heather Pease, Franceli Chapman, Carlos Ornelas, Audrey Harris and Amanee IzhaqStorytelling by Vicki JuditzMusic by Jesse Soriano and Acoustic LibrarianDance by Elizabeth Estrada, Liz Cartojano and Lauren JoseAttendees will also receive a free copy of the Reflections zine, featuring 31 different local LA artists and writers.This activity is funded in part by the California Arts Council, a state agency.
