Clearing the Air: The Educational Imperative for Healthy Indoor Air Quality

Discover how indoor air quality impacts student health and learning, and explore strategies to enhance air quality in European schools

Children are particularly vulnerable to the health threats posed by indoor pollutants, due to their ongoing growth and development. Poor indoor air quality has been linked not only to negative health outcomes but also to diminished cognitive focus and even possibly reduced school attendance. To further compound the issue, research reveals that indoor pollutant levels in many European schools not only reach but frequently exceed the maximum limits set by WHO guidelines, posing significant health risks.Given that children spend approximately 900 hours per year in school settings—where they remain indoors for about six hours each day—this issue takes on added significance. Furthermore, schools are generally more densely populated than workplaces and frequently lack adequate ventilation systems. This presents a serious public health and educational challenge with potential consequences at the societal level. <ul><li>So, how, can we effectively measure the indoor air quality in schools along with the health and cognitive implications?</li><li>Furthermore, what measures are currently being taken in Europe to understand the issue of indoor air quality in schools </li><li>and what strategies and policies should be employed to improve indoor air quality throughout schools in Europe?</li></ul>In light of these questions, the LEARN and EDIAQI projects, both members of the IDEAL cluster, will host the "Clearing the Air: The Educational Imperative for Healthy Indoor Air Quality in Schools" webinar on June 28th at 10:30. The session will delve into effective strategies for measuring indoor air quality in schools, current initiatives in Europe to address indoor air quality issues, and practical measures that schools can implement to improve air quality.
