Onassis ONX is an Onassis Culture platform dedicated to new media art and digital experiences. It empowers creators with cutting-edge technologies, artistic excellence, and financial sustainability. The program offers capacity-building, incubation, seed funding, and showcase opportunities for artists worldwide. Founded in 2020 as ONX Studio, Onassis ONX is a field-building platform with strategic partnerships in the international new media art.

Onassis ONX Summer ShowcaseExhibition Dates: June 5 - 11 Opening Hours:June 6-7; June 9-11 -- 1PM-7 PMJune 8 -- 3-7PM About the Onassis ONX Summer Showcase:The Onassis ONX Summer Showcase brings together a selection of recent projects created by Onassis ONX members working across media in XR. In the works on display, a diversity of tactics for storytelling and immersion speak to the current state of the field.“Dreams of the Jaguar’s Daughter” (Alfredo Salazar-Caro) and “Be.Longing XR” (Folly Feast Lab) center stories of migration in VR from the perspectives of young women. Salazar-Caro uses the language of surrealism as well as documentary footage to take viewers from the Guatemalan jungle to the Arizona Desert. Folly Feast Lab’s POV road diary explores a fictitious Los Angeles discovered by Amal, an queer Lebanese girl who has just arrived."Kapwa", which means kindred in Tagalog, is an interactive video installation that acts as an interrogation of cultural erasure within our diaspora and traces an outline around what is missing from the history of the global Philippine people. Created by Philippine-American artists and collaborators Aaron Santiago and Michaela Ternasky-Holland, Kapwa foregrounds a sense of loss and disconnect from ancestry by using found media of contemporary Filipinos, all asking in unison: “Who are we?”, and will be on display as an installation in our side gallery.In the main gallery, LaJuné McMillian’s projection installation and live motion-capture performance “The Portal’s Keeper” stands as a testament to transformation, healing, and self-discovery. Sculptural portals wrapped in hair extensions frame an ethereal world in which the artist's inner child asks, “what is a Black Liberated Reality?”.As part of the performance program, Georgios Cherouvim will debut “Primitive Sounds”, a prototype instrument that uses 3D objects as the source input for real-time audio synthesis. The work examines what it means to sculpt sound, as part of Cherouvim’s ongoing research in data sonification. Finally, new ONX member Viola He will share “a {room} of one’s own”, an XR expedition through the Adolescent Self as both confinement and escape, in a morphing physical-digital space. Virginia Woolfe would be proud.As part of the inaugural TRIBECA CIRCLE Incubator, Onassis ONX will also spotlight a CIRCLE selection as part of the Summer Showcase. Stay tuned for the announcement. Seeded by cultural leaders Afroditi Panagiotakou, Karen Brooks-Hopkins, and Lisa Phillips, and designed by Karen Wong, the initiative was founded in 2020 in partnership between the Onassis Foundation and New Museum’s NEW INC. It offers advanced production capabilities, advocacy, and a community hub for artists working across a wide range of disciplines. Today, the studio serves a roster of 50 members, and collaborates with five core partners on programming: NEW INC, Rhizome, Pioneer Works, NYU Tandon, and Games 4 Change. Onassis ONX is currently led by NEW INC alumni John Fitzgerald and Matthew Niederhauser, and curator Jazia Hammoudi.
