Hosted as part of the FTI&#x27;s <a href="https://www.facadetectonics.org/events/2020wc" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">2020 World Congress</a> Workshop Series, this educational workshop will provide practical guidance and hands-on exercises on how to specify fenestration systems effectively, how to manage thermal bridging on the envelope and how to assess thermal comfort next to the envelope to assess and optimize the comfort performance of your envelope design.Steve Fronek P.E., an expert on fenestration design from Wausau Window and Wall Systems will provide a how-to guide for specifying fenestration and meeting more stringent U-Factor requirements. He will also explain why consideration of U-Factor alone is not enough to deliver optimum performance in buildings. Dr. Helen Sanders will explain why the edge matters – both the frame and the glass edge – as well as how the details of the insulating glass edge can impact both thermal performance and long-term durability. Attendees will understand how best to evaluate and specify the edge of insulating glass units to achieve thermal performance for the long term.Thermal bridging also plays a major role in reducing the expected thermal performance of façade systems. Stephane Hoffmann of Morrison and Hershfield will present the key findings of the ASHRAE Research Report 1365 and how it addresses the analysis of the impact of thermal bridging. Participants will learn how 3D thermal modeling is used to calculate the effective thermal performance of façade systems using clear field U-values for assemblies and linear transmittances to account for the additional heat loss at interfaces.Finally, we will review how to assess occupant thermal comfort using ASHRAE Standard 55 methodology, using non-uniform mean radiant temperature created near the building envelope and the impact of direct solar radiation. Participants will have the ability to use on-line software tools to evaluate and compare how fenestration performance impacts occupant comfort.This is an AIA-registered course. Attendees will receive 2 LU|HSW credits.Workshop Objectives<ol><li> Understand how to meet more stringent fenestration U-factor requirements, how to effectively specify, and why U-factor in isolation is not sufficient to deliver a high-performance fenestration system.</li><li>Be able to explain why the edges of fenestration matters and know how to specify the edge of glass to ensure high thermal performance without sacrificing durability.</li><li>Understand the importance of thermal bridging and be able to implement strategies and tools to calculate the effective thermal performance of façade systems using clear field U-values for assemblies and linear transmittances to account for the additional heat loss at interfaces. Be aware of available tools, and know how to select project specific assemblies to develop effective thermal performance values that can be incorporated into whole building energy models to more accurately assess the impact of façade systems on whole building energy consumption. Be able to explain the concept of temperature Index and how it can be used to assess the impact of thermal bridging on condensation risk.</li><li>Understand how to assess thermal and visual comfort next to the building envelope, and what strategies can be implemented in order to improve thermal and visual comfort.</li></ol><ol></ol>FeaturingSTEPHANIE HOFFMAN, PE | MORRISON AND HERSHFIELDWith a Masters’ degree level education that combines structural engineering, building science and architecture, Stéphane brings a well-balanced consulting approach to the building envelope; blending scientific analysis with an understanding of aesthetics considerations. He is particularly adept at providing innovative design concepts and construction alternatives that provide value by improving durability and increasing energy efficiency. As a key technical leader at Morrison Hershfield, Stéphane has worked on projects throughout North America. He led the expansion of Morrison Hershfield’s building science business across the United States and pioneered their Façade Engineering practice focusing on conceptual design of cladding and glazing systems. He now leads their Building Science Analytics Group combining Façade Engineering, Energy Modeling and Envelope Component Modeling to assist teams design high performance buildings. Stéphane holds a Master of Engineering from McGill University and a Master of Architecture from the Université de Montréal. He is a licensed professional engineer.STEVE FRONEK, PE | WAUSAU WINDOW AND WALL SYSTEMSSteve Fronek is vice president of design engineering for Wausau Window and Wall Systems, a business unit of Apogee Enterprises. In his 40 years with Wausau, Steve has filled a number of technical and management roles, and is currently responsible for technical oversight, design concepts and product selection, as well as structural, thermal and acoustical performance verification. He holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan Technological University, is a registered professional engineer in the State of Wisconsin, and past president of the American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA).HELEN SANDERS, PHD | TECHNOFORM NORTH AMERICAHelen has 25 years’ experience in glass technology and manufacturing, especially in functional coatings, insulating glass and thermal zone technology for fenestration. Currently she is a general manager of Technoform North America, providing solutions for high performance fenestration. Helen is an advocate for high performance fenestration through active membership in many industry organizations and participation in codes and standards development. She is also president of the Façade Tectonics Institute, a non-profit organization whose mission is to improve the performance of building envelopes for people and the planet. Recently, she was named one of USGlass Magazine’s Top 100 Influencers as one of the individuals “who are leading their peers in new directions” and “changing the whole equation of how we look at the industry.” In October 2017, she was recognized by US Glass Magazine as one of the top women leaders in the glass industry. She has a Ph.D. in Surface Science from the University of Cambridge, England.ALEJANDRA MENCHACA | THORNTON THOMASETTIAlejandra co-leads the Sustainability practice for Thornton Tomasetti in Boston since 2017. She combines expertise in mechanical engineering and building science to give clients a clear understanding of the impact design strategies and innovative solutions have on long-term building performance. Alejandra leverages research and simulations to provide project teams with sustainable design knowledge and energy expertise. She is experienced in the design of both passive buildings and energy-intensive structures such as laboratories and healthcare facilities. Her expertise also includes thermal comfort, energy modeling, daylighting, and computational fluid dynamics. Alejandra holds a PhD from MIT in Mechanical Engineering, and has taught courses on natural ventilation and energy in buildings both at MIT and the Harvard GSD.Refund Policy.
