Live, online workshops for teachers led by Stanford professor Jo Boaler and the education experts at youcubed! Learn to teach conceptually and support students in making connections across math content areas. Offered for 2 grade bands: 2-5 and 6-8.

Join Jo Boaler and the youcubed team ONLINE to learn how to teach mathematics as a conceptual and connected subject to students in grades 6-8!Research shows that students learn best when mathematics is taught conceptually, not procedurally, and when it is presented to students as a network of connected, rather than discrete, ideas. Giving students many disconnected methods and rules to learn, an approach often encouraged by the curricula and standards that teachers are required to follow, can lead to a problem called cognitive interference that results in lower achievement than teaching mathematics conceptually.In this workshop, Jo Boaler and the mathematics teaching experts at youcubed will share ways to teach conceptually and support students in making connections across mathematics content areas. Through presentations, classroom videos, and interactive breakout sessions, participants will gain an understanding of the key components of this teaching approach, including rich mathematics tasks, research-based practices, mindset messages, and engaging pedagogy.Participants will learn:<ul><li>Important research in the fields of neuroscience and mathematics learning</li><li>Practical ways to apply this evidence to your teaching</li><li>How to create a positive, growth mindset classroom culture</li><li>Ways to encourage heterogeneous groups of students to work mathematically together</li><li>Approaches that transform closed math questions into rich learning experiences</li></ul>The series consists of three two-hour sessions that take place in a live, online format on the following dates:<ul><li>January 23</li><li>February 6</li><li>February 13</li></ul>On each of these dates, the workshop will begin at 3:30 pm Pacific Time and end at 5:30 pm Pacific Time. Participants will receive a certificate verifying 6 Professional Development Hours (.6 CEU) after the final session.IMPORTANT NOTES<ul><li>We no longer accept payment by purchase order/check, registration is only available by credit card</li><li>This workshop will only take place if minimum enrollment levels are achieved. If the workshop is cancelled due to low enrollment, registered participants will receive a refund.</li></ul>Please note that each participant must log into the workshop individually, from their own device, to be admitted to the workshop. We encourage teams of educators from the same school or district to participate in the workshop together, and we offer discounted tickets for groups of 2 or more, but to be admitted to the Zoom each team member must have a ticket associated with their name. If multiple people from your school or district are planning to attend this workshop, please create a group order using the "Get Tickets" button on this page, and add the number of people attending to your cart. You will then be prompted to provide information about the attendees during checkout, which will enable them to each be admitted individually to the workshop.All registered participants will receive an email before each scheduled session with a Zoom link and password. After each session, we will provide a recording and a link to all slides or other resources used in the session. These emails will be sent to all registered participants, regardless of whether they attended the live session, so that participants who wish to review the material or catch up on a session that they missed will have the opportunity to do so before the next session. All recordings and other resources will remain available to all registered participants for at least one year after the workshop end date.
